Train and Chill 11th June 2016
Train and Chill 11th June 2016
Yesterday we met some cool guys from Chaguanas and environs. We took them for a little run on our obstacle course and a short river trek to mermaid pools and purple heart basin where we relaxed for a while. It was a nice day to train and chill although it was a bit rainy. Here are a few pics from yesterday.

Exercise Machines: Weighing the Pros and Cons
Exercise Machines: Weighing the Pros and Cons
When it comes to the gym and exercise there can be many barriers to achieving the fitness we so desire. One major obstacle is the use of gym equipment. It is quite overwhelming to step into a gym and be faced with a myriad of shiny gadgets not knowing what to do with them.
We often say that we don’t need a gym to be fit. This is very true; there are a host of training regimes to achieve fitness…

Exercise and Aging
As a youth you would have never thought long and hard about the aging process until maybe well into your 40s. Today, most researchers believe that the maximum lifespan of a human being is approximately 110 years. We have seen our life expectancy improve from 47 years in the 1900s to 75 years in 1990. This vast improvement is a result of improved sanitation, medical practice and antibiotics. While…

Hike to Balata Basin Matura Easter Sunday
Hike to Balata Basin Matura Easter Sunday
Our hike to Balata Basin, Matura was awesome! 40 minutes of hiking through the Matura forest was just what was needed. We even got a little history of the area as well as a short lecture on some of the plants and animals in the area. With tubes in hand we made our way downstream for about 20 minutes till we reached Purple Heart Basin. It was a holiday well spent.

The Pain The Horror: reps, sets and frequency
The Pain The Horror: reps, sets and frequency
A good friend of mine asks me for advice from time to time. Having studied ISSA PTI, I always try to give advice to any one being sure to draw the line between a PTI (personal training instructor) and therapist or nutritionist. He asked me “Isaac I trained two days ago and I feel pain in my arms what can be the cause?” There are several answers to this question.
Firstly you should check for…

Why 3 Square Meals Can Hamper Weight Loss
Why 3 Square Meals Can Hamper Weight Loss
Having three square meals has always been the recipe for sound nutrition in my life. With the amount of fad diets that drastically cut calories or introduce meal replacements and guarantee weight loss of 10lbs in one week; The safest route for many of us is to stick to mummy’s advice of 3 square meals a day. But what if even that rule is hampering your weight loss? You should actually have 5 to 6…

Exercise and the Specialist
Exercise and the Specialist
In a previous article titled Why cardio may not be the best way to burn calories. We touched on the important role muscles play in burning off calories. Many times I see people making five laps around the savannah, constantly running marathons, only using particular machines and exercises in the gym and sometimes I wonder what their ultimate goal is. It appears that most individuals running…

Why Cardio May Not Be the Best Way to Burn Calories
Why Cardio May Not Be the Best Way to Burn Calories
It is a myth that prolonged steady training usually at 50% max heart rate and below is the best way to burn calories. I myself have fallen into that category thinking that walking for an hour is a good way to burn fat. Don’t get me wrong it is; and for the most unfit of us it may be the only starting point for them. However through my readings and experiments, I have discovered that cardio…

How I lost belly fat (part 2)
How I lost belly fat (part 2)
Before I continue part 2 of my two part series on how I lost belly fat let me make this clear. This form of losing fat is not as efficient as others. What you are simply doing is counting your calories. To make your fat disappear you should incorporate this method into your training regime. For this second part I will be more scientific in my approach.

How I Lost Belly Fat (part 1)
How I Lost Belly Fat (part 1)
I think the majority of people I see exercising do it mainly to lose weight…specifically belly fat (at least here in Trinidad and Tobago). When it comes to losing belly fat you find persons practicing a number of things from diet shakes to lime water, gym, running etc. I have never been too overweight but in the past I did develop a slight punch due to unhealthy eating habits. Here’s what I did…

Tests of Fitness
In a previous article titled What Is Fitness? we mentioned that a truly fit person must pass a series of physical tests in order to be truly classed as fit. We mentioned a popular CrossFit term “punish the specialist” which basically means that we should avoid specializing in one particular physical skill and ignoring the others. We should therefore train all physical skills. Here is a list of…

Aerobic Metabolism Your Fat Burning Friend
Aerobic Metabolism Your Fat Burning Friend
Most people believe that if you run faster or if your workouts are of higher intensity then you will burn fat more quickly or easily. This is the complete opposite. Out of the three metabolic pathways, the aerobic or oxidative metabolic pathway is the only one that uses stored fat to produce energy. As stated in our previous article, aerobic metabolism breaks down fats and carbohydrates in the…

Metabolic Pathways
According to the CrossFit Journal there are three metabolic pathways that provide energy during exercise. They are the phosphagen pathway, glycolytic pathway and oxidative pathway.
Phosphagen Pathway
Also called the Anaerobic Energy Pathway. This form of energy consumption is used during actions that require short bursts of energy and does not use oxygen to create ATP. Exercises such as…

How To Breathe While Running
How To Breathe While Running
Yesterday I was privileged to participate in a 3km race. The participants ran really fast and the course had a couple hills well. Even though I suffered through the race we managed to be placed in the top 20. During the race I realized my stamina needed some work and my breathing was not good at all. My lungs began to feel as if they were closing up and my breaths were getting shallow. So I…
