For most folks that know me, my idea of camping was something between a holiday inn and an RV....but this weekend, I camped .... In a tent....near a lake...and it was awesome! I can't remember the last time I slept in a tent. The mere idea of it conjured fears of spiders, scarcity and survivalism. Granted, a beautiful state park in central real Texas, with fully equipped facilities, solid wifi connection and a Target 10 minutes away wasn't exactly primitive survivalism. Nonetheless, I'm proud of myself for accepting this adventure and having a great time. I'm reminded how important it is to literally get out of your element, spend time with cherished friends, overcome challenges in creative ways, and most importantly, the value of learning through new experiences. Lessons learned: - Towels. Are. Everything. The hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy was onto to something. Your towel makes a decent impromptu pillow when you forget to pack one and cucumber towelettes in the cooler on ice are a glorious experience in 105-deg heat index. - campsite food can be gourmet. We enjoyed bone marrow, ribeye steaks, waffles to die for, hand-crafted beef jersey snacks, smoked salmon and more. It did not suck at all. - always pack a first aid kit. The rocks in lake Georgetown are sharp, y'all. - hydration when camping comes in many forms Water, coconut water, iced tea, session beers, whiskey, craft cocktails..... - great company is non-negotiable. Sitting around a campfire and sharing stories creates memories to last a lifetime. Spend your lifetime with people you love. Tell your story, share the laughter and go fearlessly into connections with others. Who doesn't love a good catch phrase or inside joke amongst friends to later recall a smile? (Who knew that the simple words "never mind" can carry so much weight! 😜) - say yes! Invitations for adventure are worthy endeavors. Allowing fears of spiders, scarcity and survivalism to dictate one's choices are an unfortunate potential to diminish the possibilities of magic in a lifetime. All in all - it was a perfect weekend. I will say yes to future camping invitations .... And I'll continue to say yes to my life.
