Necroreblog whoever brought back this one, but 1) You can find someone in any time who says just about anything. The argument that "some people said it, so nobody has any right to not believe it" is as nonsense as saying "some people said Trump would win in 2016, so everyone really knew he would win". Or that because some people are vegans, nobody has any reason to eat meat. Fringe minority opinions exist.

2) The English brought slavery to the future United States and didn't abolish slavery until the 1830's. Multiple Northern US abolished slavery in the aftermath of the revolution. Vermont did it in 1777, Massachusetts in 1783, so on.

3) The slavery debate then is really more comparable to the Global Warming debate today.

Plenty of people admit climate change is real, while also continuing to contribute to the problem by driving cars and what not.

Plenty of people admitted slavery was wrong, but continued to contribute to the problem by owning slaves or purchasing products they made.

Many solutions to climate change have been proposed but all have problems, same then with slavery.

Some portion of people deny climate change is real, some then denied black people had rights.

But really, all this is besides the main point. There were a ton of people during those days who did defend slavery, but the Founding Fathers were all quite progressive and unanimous in their dislike of it. They were aware of the contradiction. They were deeply bothered by it. But they, unlike us looking back, had to deal with the realities of the situation. The social, economic, and political consequences - and that's besides the fact that in those days, the United States was far too fractured for any one man to have the power to end slavery.

It was ultimately something that would have required an overwhelming amount of political force, something that was difficult even in the context of the Civil War almost a century later. That being when the most pro-slavery elements were in open rebellion and President Lincoln had a level of power the founders could only have dreamed of, by the way.

Todd Howard has said part of the reason he's waited so long is because he wants to be sure the "technology" is where it needs to be for the game he wants to make.

And yeah - when you look back on his career, that's understandable.

Morrowind, 2002. Planned to have the entire province of Morrowind, had to be scaled down to just Vvardenfell because of technology limitations.

Oblivion, 2006. Both a massive intercity arena system and radiant ai had to be cut for lack of space. It's also very likely this is why Sutch was scrapped, and possibly the Elder Council questline.

Skyrim, 2011. The original dynamic and complex plans for the Civil War, as well as a number of other concepts, were cut because again disk space was too limited and the end result would have been too buggy.

He spent over a decade continuously working on Elder Scrolls games and having them constantly need to be cut down and scaled back over hardware limitations. I understand why he wanted to give it some time, rather than the same rinse and repeat.

Sometimes it's very funny how catholics, or even eastern orthodox believers of all people fall for the American evangelical propaganda of a tradwife. An idea of a docile housewife who only does domestic work and raises children that would make the typical medieval, devout peasant faint.

How could people who have the tradition of "Ora et Labora" ever think this is what a woman is supposed to do. How can European catholics and orthodox, whose ideal woman for centuries was the strong peasant woman, doing arduous and tough work, and also the head of the family since she takes care of most things in the house, think a mindless housewife who dresses in (often vain) floral dresses and makes jam all day is the most virtuous woman.

How can people who have women like Zippora in the Bible, who went with Moses instead of staying at home and and even saves him from God's wrath, think a woman needs to passive all the time. The blessed Mary, Saints like St. Hildegard all exist, and yet a woman is supposed to be nothing virtuous. The 'tradwife' ideal is nothing more than a creation of the so heavily imposed American lifestyle, a reflection of a puritanical Christian culture, but it seems that the biggest contenders of it are anything but Protestant.
