unfortunately very true. Doing Better does not always mean never being upset or never being triggered or never having trouble. often Doing Better means experiencing those things and being able to keep going/cope healthily/move on. if you’re in a bubble with no sensation, if you’re numbing yourself out, that’s not what recovering really is. it won’t help you have a happier life it’ll just make your world smaller and smaller until you can’t fit anywhere anymore. gotta learn to make peace with the hard stuff too, that’s the only way to keep going
I did not come into Tumblr dot com to be called out in this way.
#happypridemonth
insane to me how, to some people, this is not a common sense
To me there are a couple more types of fanfic
- fanfic that I sometimes like depending on my mood
- fanfic that I like somewhat
- fanfic that I like but don't want to like
- fanfic I don't like but I can't stop reading
and they are all good and only deserve nice comments!
Happy Pride!
Every pride, you must reblog this. No exceptions
Anyone gonna mention how this guy actually preformed live with Carly Rae Jepsen?
I’m gonna scream is2g
I was thinking of reblogging this again just because the original video is still amazing, but then I see the second video and lost my mind. The upgraded fan, the body glitter, the sheer fact that he got to do this with the actual singer.
like to charge, reblog to cast.

james flint's most endearing trait is that he understands women to be inherently three-dimensional, complex and deserving of respect (especially for the positions of authority they occupy). in contrast, he is barely convinced that most men have brains.
Role Model
"...he did that- he made Troy Barrett smile like that. Somehow, Harris had earned that, and he realized, in that moment, how fiercely he would protect that smile. How fiercely he would protect Troy."
Oof... y'all, this was an emotionally charged read. The emotions were flying in from every angle. I was angry, sad, proud, laughing- sometimes at the same time. These books have fun, cute covers, and on the surface they're gay hockey romance books... but Rachel Reid goes so much deeper and weaves dark and emotional themes into each book.
Troy Barrett is traded from one of the best teams in the NHL, to the worst: the Ottawa Centaurs (what a bad ass team mascot, btw). The reason for the trade was because he went off on star player (and his former BFF) Dallas Kent for being a rapist. The team manager didn't take too kindly to Troy calling out his friend and teammate in the middle of a game, and traded his ass.
Troy's reputation isn't the best in the NHL because he was so close with Dallas. People assume birds of a feather. So it's fair that the Centaurs are leery with Troy, despite his attack on Dallas. In addition to the Centaurs being leery, the Toronto fanbase is livid, because you don't turn on your teammates, and you don't support women attacking a man's character. Sadly, this was just another realistic element to the series.
"Men never believe women. Women don't believe women... What were you expecting to happen? The whole league rallies behind Barrett, and Kent gets kicked out of hockey?"
Rachel Reid really understood the assignment with this one.
Now. I'd like to say I know Troy Barrett is a fictional character, but every single sport franchise needs a Troy Barrett to call players out on their bullshit. I live in Wisconsin and am a huge Green Bay Packers fan. We're dealing with some Josh Jacobs bullshit, and I am disheartened and disappointed in his recent assault and battery charges. We don't roll that way here. It's not accepted or tolerated. And we believe women. Period. Unless their names are Blake Lively.
Harris Drover is the team's social media manager, and he's a big, gay, bearded ray of sunshine. He tries to crack Troy's tough exterior, but Troy is filled with self-loathing over supporting Dallas Kent for so long, and he's a closeted gay man. He wants to move in the world like Harris does, but everything is telling him that's wrong and shameful. The emotion bleeds off the pages of this book.
The only player willing to give Troy the benefit of the doubt is Ilya Rozanov. Of course. He's the team captain, and he hates Dallas Kent. "People like Kent stand in the way of other people being happy. For no reason. I am always glad to punch people like that."
I wonder if Rachel Reid has a blast writing Rozanov's dialogue. It's hilarious. And for the record, as we roll into Pride month, I too want to punch people that stand in the way of other people being happy. You got a problem with gay people? Cool. I have a problem with you. Move the fuck along.
Anyway, Troy finds himself catching feelings for Harris. He's envious of the way Harris moves in the world. He's just so comfortable being himself. He doesn't care what people think. Meanwhile Troy is still dealing with hate online and has a homophobic father who idolizes Dallas Kent.
The team is on their way to a game when their airplane almost crashes, and it has Troy re-evaluating everything in his life. Ilya reminds him he's got to focus on what's important, and later that night he finds himself in Harris's hotel room.
Bom-chicka-wow-wow...
From there, Troy starts creating the type of life he wants to be proud of. He starts spending more time with Harris. He posts resources for sexual assault survivors on his Instagram. He plays damn good hockey. And little by little, the small choices lead to happiness, which lead to bigger, braver decisions, and more happiness.
The book ends with an unrealistic happily ever after. Because let's be honest here: star athletes accused of sexual assault are rarely ever held accountable, and they have an entire team of people to cover up their mistakes and continue enabling them. But I want to live in Rachel Reid's world, where bad people are punished for their poor life decisions, gay people are accepted for who they are, and hockey is way sexier than it has any right to be.
A girl can dream, right?

i will never get over this one i’m afraid
Troy Barrett being from Vancouver makes so much sense to me as someone from Vancouver. This man has a skincare routine, likes salmon, occasionally plays tennis, and Rachel describes him as being "model pretty"? It all checks out.
In my head, he does the Grouse Grind at least once during the off season. He's hanging around Kits Beach to soak in the sun. Then at some point, he'd end up at the The Roxy. The vision is so clear.
Post TLG, Shane and Ilya get weird questions and attention of people saying they don't "look" gay and questioning their identities. In retaliation, Harris starts a TikTok trend. It's pretty simple: he goes up to a (gay) player, says "wait, you're gay? But you don't look gay 🤨," and they do something in response. Luca looks bewildered at the camera for a moment before playing Lady Gaga from his phone and doing little dance moves with his hands. Harris catches Troy for the video as he's putting on his winter clothes to leave the rink, so he responds by flicking the tail of his scarf dramatically over one shoulder and silently strutting away while Harris cracks up behind the camera. Shane gives the camera his flattest, most unamused stare before giving a textbook z-snap and lookjng back at his phone. Ilya instantly falls into a perfect death drop on the ice with one skate in the air
In my soul I know that in the future when both Troy and Shane are in therapy (because they both desperately need it) one of the two of them gets an autism assessment done, and when the one who gets it down mentions the fact that they got it done and that they’re autistic everyone in the locker room’s head whips to the other one. Because those two act so similarly all the centaurs realize if one of them has it the other probably does too.
Role Model Thoughts
ok I’m about a third of the way through Role Model and these are my thoughts
Troy’s inner monologue is doing a lot of heavy lifting on the redemption arc so far.
I’m surprised at how easily people are accepting Troy especially Kip/Scott saying Troy was a hero. Which makes me wonder…
What if most of Troy’s homophobic were in the locker room/with Toronto and not public? Zane says that he assumed Troy was an asshole by association, and when Troy tells Harris that he was “contributing” to the slurs in Toronto locker room it seems like this is new (though not surprising) information to Harris. I don’t know why Wyatt wouldn’t give a heads up on some of Troy’s behavior, but it doesn’t put on interesting layer of someone getting forgiveness without fully acknowledging the wrongs.
Troy is a soft, squishy boy.
His outward homophobia was a protective strategy to hide himself.
What we see in canon is that Troy punches up with his homophobia - Ilya and Shane are the two biggest dogs in the league and them fucking each other is 0% possible b/c rivalry. The moment Ryan - who is the lowest of the low in player hierarchy - comes out, Troy stops saying homophobic shit in the locker room.
It's performative to reinforce his cishet image and to deter the people he was traumatized by: people like his father.
Troy is playing a part and if none of the people he needs to convince are nearby to hear it, he has no reason to say anything.
But, we also see him cutting it out when someone is nearby to hear him who would get hurt by his words (see: Ryan)
He has no reason to say it to anybody else to hurt them, he needs Dallas or his father to be nearby, otherwise his performance is void.
Anybody who was not in the locker room in Toronto can't actually recall Troy saying slurs. Even Wyatt is pretty vague and it's more like: he is a dick and was friends with Kent.
Now, Troy being a dick on the ice is canon. We don't see it as much in the book because of his mental state, but Troy Barrett is a Grade A+ Pest.
A Brad Marchand level nuisance.
A Troy Headcanon
At some point in the future he starts calling his negative/ self loathing thoughts his “Curtis Thoughts”, like if he starts thinking of himself as weak or that he needs to man up or anything that sounds suspiciously like his father’s commentary. It gets to the point where if he’s having a bad night Harris might lean in and whisper into his ear, “Shut up Curtis” and this almost always gets Troy to laugh and stop whatever spiral he’s in.
Ilya in TLG is like: I'm the worst captain I'm a shitty friend I'm a terrible teammate what good am I even doing
Meanwhile Troy: ILYAAAAAA 💗🩷🌸 OMG ILYA WITH PUPPIES 🩷💐🌸 OMG ILYA AND THE KIDS IN THE HOSPITAL 🩷🩷 I'M ILYA ROZANOV'S NUMBER 1 FAN 💕 OMG ILYA PLAYING MARIO KART 💗💘 OMG ILYA BEST CAPTAIN BESTEST BEST FRIEND 💘💗💕🩷 OMG ILYA WEARING A SANTA HAT 🌸🌺 OMG ILYA 💗🩷 ILYAAAA 💐💗🩷🩷💘💞
And don't even get me started on Luca Haas who I'm 110% sure writes Ilya Rozanov x reader fanfics and draws Ilya Rozanov nsfw fanart on ao3
Troy Barrett learns how to crochet from the Drover sisters and starts crocheting on planes when Harris isn't on the trips to hold his hand. Then he starts teaching Luca.
Then he's teaching Ilya and Shane.
And then the Centaurs are all crocheting little plushies and bag charms and shit for their hospital visits.
Harris takes a photo to post abt how the Centaurs are dealing with a plane delay for a stressful game and it's just all the guys in an airport terminal crocheting things.
Shane is being used as a stand-in for the hat Ilya is crocheting for David. Shane's making a little hockey puck keychain for Rose. Luca's making a cover for his sketchbook. Bood's making Cassie a sweater with some really fancy yarn. Wyatt's making a life sized bulbasaur and his hand is all the way up his bulbasaur's ass shoving stuffing into it.
Troy isn't in the picture.
People panic Troy's injured.
Harris has to post a separate one that's a selfie that shows Troy fast asleep koala-wrapped around Harris in Harris' lap.
Troy would 10/10 knit or crochet
i know that in role model/the long game troy and ilya mostly bond over secretly being nicer and softer and gayer than people realise, BUT i choose to believe that one day (maybe post the stanley cup the centaurs win with the power of friendship) the team all goes out to the club and there’s throwback edm hits playing and troy and ilya’s fuckboy party personas activate like fucking sleeper agents and they have the biggest night of their lives together
