Even though Byler isn't canon, thera are SOME Milevens refuse to see the evidence, refuse to see analyses, or listen to theories.
Do you know why that is? Because if they do, they'll see what's always been there, because they prefer to mock and feed their ego rather than think about someone else and their version of the story.
Even the most confident Bylers could see that Mileven was something, we could accept that they loved each other (even if not all of us consider it romantic)
But we saw beyond the surface, and that's why many of us are angry, disappointed, and sad. It's because we had faith, because we thought beyond even if it bordered on being "delusional", because we put creativity, love and thought into it
And that's something that Milevens who go and comment things like "at least mileve happen" "Bylers are so delusional" "we won" don't do... they don't have the same level of theories that we had because for them accepting a pretty lie it's easier than see the painful truth
You're ship being canon (even though is as bones as ours) doesn't make a positive change on anything, It only feeds the ego of homophobic straight people, those who complain because a character doesn't act like a real man or woman. You gain nothing from your ship
We would have obtained well-done representation, a step towards being able to see more like us in science fiction, action, horror, and other genres besides romance. It would be insurance for queer couples in shows or movies that are adapting other types of entertainment with queer people.
It would be insurance to ensure that shows with representation are not cancelled or remove
It would have been a way of demonstrating how awful it is to say "I am not this, so I don't write about it." And how wrong that mentally is
It would be a way to demonstrate that minority representation is easy, even if you can't cover everyone.
It would have been a message of encouragement to people like me who believed for so long that we had to hide, and who did so out of fear. For those of us who gave up on love without even trying, for those of us who lost friends because of something we couldn't control.
Byler would have made a change, but there is none so blind as he who will not see
