I'm Kat, and I'm a 30 something year old Nerdsbian, Writer, and Show Afficianado. May The Nerdsbian Force Be With You! Just returned after almost a decade away from Tumblr. Which means a decade away from my SQ Fic Going in Circles. Maybe I’ll get back to it if people still want it. All I can promise is some new fics. Currently the big one is the first of my Cinescopic fics, which are inspired by pulp and Gothic stories from the 1950's. The fic is called 'City in the Sea'. Synopsis:

Isle of Wight, 1956.

Emma Nolan is the last heir of her family's estate. Her ambitious half-brother, Killian, wants to uncover treasures rumored to be hidden in their ancestral home. However, their search reveals a lost city under the sea, ruled by a powerful pirate queen and her crew.

Caught between Killian's greed and the pirate queen's heart, Emma must decide where her loyalties lie. Is the true villain the queen of the depths or her brother on land? With her heritage at stake, Emma must choose wisely to save everything she holds dear.

No knowledge of OUaT or Swan Queen is necessary to read this story. It’s a wholly original story, just happening to feature a few of our titular characters.

City in the Sea is the first in a series of Cinescopic fanfics set in the same time period. It’s written in the style and structure of old paperback pulp and adventure novels, and I hope you enjoy!

@who-canceled-roger-rabbit Gotham is traditionally treated as located in New Jersey, yes, but there technically isn't a fixed official location for it other than 'somewhere northeast'. It's general design and architecture are usually a Chicago/London/Manhattan hybrid. Like Chicago is DEFINITELY inspiration for a lot of Gotham features and vibes. IMO Chicago's influence is heavily felt in particular through a lot of 90s arcs such as Cataclysm and No Man's Land.

What's your favourite ridiculous piece of 90s technology?

Thank you so much for the excellent question!! I've been meaning to answer this one for a while, so here goes.

My favourite ridiculous piece of 90s technology is PocketMail! It wasn't that ridiculous at the time, but it's definitely something that could have only existed in the late 1990s / early 2000s. I actually have a PocketMail device, an Oregon Scientific PM-32 that I found on the side of the road in a box full of broken landline telephones!

PocketMail devices were essentially very basic Personal Digital Assistants that allowed you to access your emails without having to use a computer with an internet connection! Here you can see the basic screen and buttons for composing, sending and receiving emails.

But remember, this thing doesn't have Wi-Fi - so how exactly can it access your emails? If you flip the device over, you'll see a strange little speaker thing that flips out...

That's an acoustic coupler! You had to hold the device up to the handset of a landline telephone! So if you had a PocketMail account (with a special email address ending in @pocketmail.com) and were away from your computer/office, you could simply dial the phone number for the PocketMail service on the nearest landline telephone, then hold the device up to the handset so that it can send and receive email data with the email server in the form of audio - and presto! You have just sent an angry last-minute email to your intern for neglecting to look after your Tamagotchi while you were on a business trip to sell Y2K survival kits.

But... what did it sound like? The phone service has long since been shut down after the rise of more capable and portable internet-connected devices, but if you press the little 'Mail' button on the top of the device, you can still hear the sounds of this poor, obsolete little thing trying to reach out and communicate in the only way it knows how to:

Ok, so today’s art post is something I’ve wanted to create for a while!

Wasn’t sure which version to post - so you get all three. These colored pencil drawings are based on the epic story “The Gorgon” by @katerinadeannika which is like stepping into an old sci-fi horror movie. It reels you in and keeps you on your toes. The characters are so vibrant and you can feel the atmosphere as if you’re really there. It is definitely its own type of story and so much fun. It’s one of my favs from Kat!
