I love it when characters have some kind of weird bond between them. Psychic bonds, telepathic links, empathy links, soul bonds, and whatever else. What if you were always aware of the people you loved? What if you could feel their presence in a way beyond the five senses? What if they could never fully hide themselves from you? What if you could never fully hide yourself from them?
Stephanie feels anyone
"tens of thousands" dead by plague in Contagion... "over a hundred thousand" dead in the earthquake & aftermath of the earthquake in Cataclysm... how the heck is Gotham still standing? and that's not even factoring in the rogue attacks, the random one-off killers, the apparent lack of OSHA, like genuinely why does anyone still live there? How does anyone still live there?
Actually the intro to Legacy claims that "hundreds of thousands" died in Contagion so like. it's actually worse. I'm guessing that it's probably not more than 200 or 300 thousand (otherwise "tens of thousands" would just be a ridiculously low estimate), but that's still a lot. Me personally, I would move somewhere else, but Gothamites must have their reasons for staying.
In Batman: The Cult it says that about 4 million people have left Gotham while "fifty percent of Gotham's population has decided to ignore the evacuation order," which implies a total population of around 8 million, which would mean that in the time between The Cult and Contagion, another half million people have died or otherwise permanently left Gotham (giving us the 7.5 million figure from the beginning of Contagion) which is just. That's a lot of people.
There are about 3-4 years between Jason's death & the start of NML (as far as I can tell anyway), and in that time enough people died or left Gotham that the population shrank by 1 million. And that's accounting for births & people moving into the city, which means that the actual number of deaths is probably higher. Good grief, why does anyone live there.
I'll also add that "hundreds of people die" just in the two weeks that Blackfire rules the city. I'm not entirely certain if that counts the 100 people that tried to rush one of the bridges but even if it does, the statement of "hundreds" doesn't change.
I'd like to add that in Detective Comics #725, Bruce mentions that, "Over the last twenty years, the population's dropped by half." This implies that at some point, Gotham had a population of 14 to 16 million people.
For comparison, New York City has about 8.5 million people as of the 2024 census. If we go worldwide, the Gotham of "20 years ago" according to this figure could have been in the top 20 most populous cities in the world today.
Based on this panel (detective comics #698), it looks like the Gotham of 20 years ago had 15 million people. Guess that explains where all these uninhabited buildings the rogues keep setting up in come from.
10 million??!?! Jim Starlin you are not making my population theories make any more sense
this takes place early in zuko’s reign while he’s still trying to figure out what’s the person he needs to be for his people and sokka really goes there and says “they don’t need you do be anything but yourself”

I was talking about Sherlock Holmes with my cool weird 42 year old coworker the other day and he said that he had read other works by ACD but not any Sherlock Holmes. ACD is smiling down from heaven on his one and only true fan.
i really enjoy the concept of preboot!jason missing some very basic life skills because he spent his teenage years dead, comatose, “catatonic”, running around on his talia-sponsored world tour, or crime lord-ing
nothing major because he’s highly competent but just like the teeniest tiniest things that he either never cared enough to figure out or came up with the most absurd, convoluted solutions to
he’s stealing kord industries from under lucius and bruce’s noses no problem, but ask him to walk into an actual bank and open a checking account he has no clue what he’s doing
he starts growing stubble during lost days and talia comments on it, off-handedly suggesting he uses a straight blade to shave. jason, interpreting this suggestion incredibly literally, tries shaving with an actual fucking knife. im sure he eventually figures out a less…unhinged method, but he’s still got crazy razor burn for a couple years because no one actually ever taught him how to shave
his romantic experience stops at middle school so he’s a bit socially inept in that area. he’s not completely innocent or clueless because he’s still good at reading people and puberty happens whether or not you’re around peers, but the first time someone texts him “wyd” he thinks they’re genuinely just asking him about his day
he doesn’t know how to tie a tie, he doesn’t know how to drink (safely), if he was legally alive and not a crime lord he’d still be committing tax fraud because he wasn’t old enough to take a civics class before he died
not big giant major things like driving a car or renting an apartment, because he’d have to figure those out with or without an adult at some point or another, but just like these small misconceptions or gaps in his knowledge that manage to slip through without being corrected. it’s funny and sad which is like my favorite overlap for jason todd
