Paper Rings is an upcoming slice of life roleplay set in Toronto, Canada that has been in the works for weeks. We will foster a truly inclusive environment where all characters and members are welcome. It’s one thing to say this, but it’s another to act on it and create a community for everyone.

Colin chuckled, amused by how exasperated she looked. "Alright, alright I'll help. All you had to do was ask, yknow." He said, walking towards her. He'd been watching her fumble with that skeleton for what, half an hour now? If he was a bit more of a gentleman, maybe he would've offered to help. But Colin was absolutely happy standing there and watching her struggle. It was entertaining.

Cass smiled, a small scoff leaving her lips. He was right. The plans they'd made - she was going to be a fashion designer in Paris, and 12 year old her managed to get him to agree to modelling her clothes by bribing him with cookies. And now, here she was. The resident shrink. Her mom was getting old and with her siblings off travelling the world and living their lives, Cass felt obligated to take care of her. It wasn't such a bad thing. Lorelei had saved her from a life of bouncing around foster homes.

Besides, she's way too attached to this small town to ever leave it behind. Yeah, she was away for a while but when her littlest sister finally went off to college, she moved back to look after her mom.

"oh, you know. School. More school. And even more school. In between all this school, I almost considered dropping it to become a dancer at a nightclub." Her mom's best friend owned a club, and she and her siblings practically grew up there. The dancers had /so much fun/ and it was better than six years of studying. But she'd persevered.

“Remind me why I don’t have a beverage to dump over your head right now,” Angie growled. She half considered just getting something quick from a cart to use; the five dollars would be well worth it in her eyes. Maybe a smoothie…something to really seep in and stink up his clothes.

“It’s a…fruit? I think? Pretty sure it’s a fruit.” Hadn’t her sister made some kind of dish with kumquats at some point? Or was that her uncle? Like it mattered. Angie rolled her eyes as Mo parroted and the word slowly lost all meaning. “Well, I guess we’re sticking with kumquat!” she sighed. “You like it so much, I’m sure we’ll find a way.” 

All at once, Angie stopped still in her tracks. “You do realize we’ll…have to share a room, right? Are you cool with that?”

Mo frowned at her. "You're mean. No wonder I'm the only friend you have." He said playfully, rolling his eyes. At her concern, he laughed. "You realize it's my house right? And that I can always make an excuse to spend the night with my brothers who I see so rarely instead of my..." He paused, a fake look of disgust on his face. "Girlfriend, who I'm stuck with every day. Pretty sure that excuse would work at your place too."

He didn't think he'd have a problem sharing a room with her. There were many movie nights they fell asleep together on the couch. It wouldn't be the weirdest thing in the world. At least... It wouldn't be for him. She seemed horrified by the idea of having to share a room with him.

But his mom was such a socialite. And a lot of his siblings had also gotten the social gene - more or less, at least. That’s how they ended up here. With four adults in their mid twenties throwing a college style rager. Were they not too old for this shit? They claimed to want to “give him and Shanti a genuine college experience.” But he knew in reality that the party was more for themselves than it was for him.

Finnigan was very antisocial. He hated crowds. So when there was a large number of people in his house - his one safe space, he was NOT happy about it. He’d managed to somehow find a secluded garden in their yard and was currently hiding there with his emotional support dog, Ophelia. She’d actually led him here. She was the one who found the corner, not him.

So here Finn was, trying to enjoy the peace of being alone when he heard footsteps coming towards him.

Once, she went to work with all her makeup still on." He still laughed at the thought of one of her patients coming in for therapy to find her with sparkly eyelids and red lips. "You know, it might have something to do with the fact that we were practically raised at uncle Caleb's nightclub, now that I think about it." Finn said with a smile. He didn't hate the nightclub. So it was loud, and really bright. It had been very fun to explore when they were younger. Plus, the dancers always gave Finn lots of eye candy to stare at.

"that sounds great." He said, leaning onto her a little. He really would love her to visit more. Ophelia perked up at something, before running off. Finn didn't seem shaken though. Instead, he just laughed. "She likes chasing things."

Britney nodded in agreement. “They really did. It’s like they invited the whole town and some.” She stood up from where she knelt, sitting down on the bench beside him.

She frowned lightly, understanding what he must be feeling. Britney also had anxiety when it comes to huge parties. She was often caught twiddling her thumbs or spacing out when socializing began too much for her. Though, she learnt to cope with it, knowing to just take a break when it started to be too much for her.  

Britney inhaled the autumn chill before slowly exhaling. “You know, it’s much better out here. More quieter. Your siblings should’ve really asked ya first before they set this up, knowing you hate parties. I don’t like it much in there either. I was going to actually leave soon, but I’ll just keep you company instead. How’s life with you, Finn? It’s been so long since I’ve seen ya. I’ve missed ya.” She asked, hoping to stir up a conversation to take his mind off of this party.

Something that wouldn't have been too enjoyable for him either - but definitely a lot more enjoyable than this party was. "We finished a game today. They wanted to go out and celebrate but uhm...they couldn't get a reservation. So it's not completely my siblings' fault." Finn explained, running his fingers through Ophelia's fur.

"I've missed you too." A hint of a smile broke onto his lips. "I wish you'd visit more, Brit. It gets very tiring being around six socialites all the time." He definitely had more in common with her than he did with the rest of his family.

When she was close enough to see Finn, she smiled softly as she set her phone in her back pocket before she reached down to pet Ophelia. “It was more of like, a spontaneous thing. I literally just got the invite this afternoon while bumping into a friend. So I just thought why the heck not? It’s been so long since I’ve been to a party anyway. Nevertheless seeing you. I’m glad I found you.” She babbled on with a shrug of her shoulders, looking up at Finn as she pet behind Ophelia’s ears. 

She stood up. “It’s too crowded in there, isn’t it? It’s like a rave in there, it’s so crazy.” She commented, realizing why he was out here all alone. From what she remembered from Finn, he wasn’t too into the whole party scene. This must be hell for him.

"I know. Mo and Roxie really went...a little too crazy for the guest list tonight." He shuddered a little, petting Ophelia as she settled down back next to him. "I hate it." He mumbled, drawing circles in the mud with his finger. It really was a lot too crowded in there for him. Crowds made him anxious and claustrophobic, both very unpleasant feelings. But then again, being alone sometimes made him feel the same thing. It was a precarious balance. One or two people he trusted, that was enough. It's why Ophie was always with him.

"sit." He told her, patting the space next him and his golden retriever. He still remembered the Christmas his mom gave her to him. She was so small then. It had been close to three years from that day, and Ophelia had quadrupled in size. She now made the perfect snuggling partner. He did kind of miss her puppy stage, but was still grateful to have her.

“What?! In his sleep? How did he not wake up? Tattoo machines are so loud!” Angie shook her head, part of her still not believing him but the bathroom story was too good. “She couldn’t do that to me. I’m a light sleeper.” Except when she stressed herself with work…which was most days. Look, those crashes from all the sugary coffee she drank hit hard, okay?

“Like we’re spies or something?” she cracked with a chuckle. “I guess so. I mean, I’ll probably be fine, but you can definitely use it if you need. Let’s see…” Twisting the beads of her bracelet, she stared off into space for a moment. “God, why is food the only thing coming to my mind? ‘Kumquat’, ‘blueberry pie’…”

It’s been a long time since Britney was invited to a party. Normally, she would refuse, saying she was too busy with work but, tonight she thought why the heck not? She told her best friend she was going out for the night. Even suggesting for her to go with her. But at last, Michelle refused. For now. Britney told her the location, just in case she needed a night off of Royal duties. 

Taking a deep breath out, Britney entered the party seeing it was more crowded than usual. Her own anxiety suddenly filing up. She took another inhale, then exhaled before she started to engage with a small group of people. After she started talking, she became more comfortable. And yet, within an hour her social battery started to be low.

Phone in one hand and a red beer cup in the other, she started to walk outside just to get some fresh air. Even wearing a long sleeve pink sweatshirt and jeans, the  Autumn chill did not bother her. In fact, it made her calmer. After texting Michelle to alert she was safe and heading home soon, she looked up only to find herself in a garden. From afar she saw a man alone. As she walked closer to him, she realized she recognized him. 

“Finn? Is that you?” She asked softly with a tilt of her head, walking closer towards him.

While Finn was really enjoying being alone, seeing a familiar face wasn't the worst thing ever. "Britney? Hi." Ophelia recognized her as well, getting up from her place besides Finn to jump up on her and ask for pets.

"I...didn't know you were coming today." He craned his neck to look behind her and make sure she was alone. The last thing he wanted was for a bunch of people to find his hiding spot and encroach on it. His bedroom was already full of people making out (ew). This corner of the garden was his safe haven right now.

guilt had crawled at her for three years; she had never been one for attachments, which had made their arrangement perfect at the time. her intentions had been just to disappear for a few days - to take care of the issue, to leave them none the wiser about what they’d done. 

but she’d gotten a job offer across the country instead. and in the process of moving and settling down, she became attached. it was easier, almost - she wasn’t alone. and while being a mother had never been in the cards for her before, georgie found herself willing to move heaven and hell to make her child happy. 

but libby was going to turn two in a few weeks, and it didn’t seem fair that she didn’t know her father. or that her father didn’t even know she existed. which was why she’d gotten on an airplane, flying back to her former home, holding their daughter in her arms when he opened the door. 

“surprise,” she greeted, a smile on her lips that didn’t quite seem as genuine as she wanted it to. she was terrified - he could slam the door in their faces, not believe her if she told him libby was his daughter, walk away - but she put on a brave face regardless. “sorry, that was - glib. hi. can we come in?”

Mohinder did not seem happy to see her at all. He'd loved her, and then she'd up and left. And it left Finn so heartbroken. If he was being honest, he didn't really want anything to do with her. The child did catch his eye, but he ignored her for now. Mo wasn't a bad guy. If this was any other situation he'd be greeting them with a smile. But Georgie not only broke his heart, but left his little brother very upset. And if there was one thing Mo didn't tolerate, it was people messing with his family. "What happens if I say no?" He was kind of glad that Finn wasn't home at the moment (yes, he still lived at home to take care of his mother). An engagement ring sat on his finger - a brilliant silver band with the letter R on it. Probably his fiancee's initial.

plot inspo: we’ve been hooking up for a few weeks now in secret because you’ve said that you’re not ready for a relationship since you’re still reeling from what your toxic ex and now, i catch you out on a date night with some girl.

     a fancy restaurant with some pretty brunette was the last place she expected to see him. after all, he’s been insistent that he’s not ready for anything serious. and yet, this place screams otherwise because why would you take someone out to some expensive restaurant if it’s just for a casual hookup? sofia was having a pleasant dinner with her family when she caught his eyes, immediately souring her mood. excusing herself from their table, the blonde headed towards the powder room to pick up her marbles because she was an inch away from confronting him. but apparently, she need not do that as she heard the door shut behind her, catching his reflection on the mirror. “ this is the women’s washroom, ” she remarked curtly, her lips pressed on a thin line as their eyes met through the mirror.

Colin caught her eye from a corner table, where he'd been chatting away happily with his "date". He saw the look that flashed across her face. And despite denying that he knew her that well, he kind of did. Colin found himself also excusing himself from the table and following Sofia.

"I know that." Colin said, equally as sour. "You know, I wasn't lying about not being ready for a relationship." He ran a hand through his hair, pulling on his tie. "That's my sister. She's visiting and I thought I'd bring her out to dinner." He wasn't lying. It had been ages since he'd seen Roxie. What with him busy with his lawyering and she busy with her tattoo parlor. They wanted to make the most of the few nights they had together.

Open to female muses | Plot: Our muses are fwb but Holly has been putting too much pressure on them lately because she wants more. 

“Wow, really? You’re leaving? You’re such a fucking coward!”, Holly shouted after her. For weeks now, they had been hooking up and every time she brought up the subject of possibly going further, of possibly dating for real, the other would run away. It was ridiculous. “You know what, I wish we never met!”

Roxie was quite happy with their arrangement. She didn't really want a relationship, what with the tattoo shop being in its first few weeks of business. She was busy. She definitely did not have the time to juggle a relationship. She'd made this known to Holly several times, and yet the other woman seemed to be pushing her a lot lately.

Roxie turned around angrily at her shouts. "I'm not a coward for knowing what I can handle! I've told you, I don't have the time for a relationship right now." Her face was getting red with anger but every time she looked into Holly's eyes, she forgot what she was going to say. "Maybe call me if you ever get that fact through your thick skull." She mumbled, before turning around again. She gathered her things, and left, closing the door behind her.

He truly was an idiot, wasn’t he? After several attempts to kick down the door to his apartment, granting him a few neighbors opening their doors to check what the hell was going on, Eric had admitted defeat, now sitting on the floor. He worked in the fucking police and had locked himself out of his apartment. Praying no one would call the fire department, knowing it’d guarantee a couple weeks of teasing at the office, Eric simply sat and thought of a way to break down the door.

Feet stopped in front of him, Eric not even looking up, breath leaving his lungs. “Yeah, I know what you’re thinking and yes, I really locked myself out of my place. Don’t ask me how, I swore I had the key-”, touching his pockets to check one last time. “but apparently not and now I’m stuck out here. Don’t laugh.”, even though he was on the verge of it too. @indiestarter​

"actually, I thought you were waiting here to mug someone." Roxie drawled, tease evident in her voice. She owned a tattoo parlor not too far from here, and lived in an apartment complex a few blocks away. "You have to admit, it is kind of funny. A good idea is to keep an extra key in the bag you carry everyday." Her mom taught her that. Thinking about her family made her smile grow a little bit sad. She missed them. Sure, they lived a twenty minute drive away but even then, living alone was a lot different than going home to them at night.

Roxie cleared her throat, pushing purple bangs out of her face as she directed her attention towards him again. "Good thing for you, that I know how to pick locks." Her grin was back, and she quickly got out two Bobby pins. "Now move over, I'm gonna get you back into your house."

“unless they’re like, class A douchebags, yeah.” Cass responded, playfulness evident in her voice. “I don’t want people to feel like they’re at the doctor here. Instead, maybe like they’re visiting an old friend.” It was the reason she’d taken such care to make this a welcoming space. No one liked going to the doctor. But going to see your friend once a week and drink tea with them? That was something they might enjoy. “Visiting any kind of medical place is scary and stressful. I just don’t wanna add to it, you know?” There were definitely patients who didn’t see this friendly side of her. But usually she’d just stop seeing someone if they got on her nerves that much.

“I’ve had my fair share of therapy visits, doctor visits and the like. They’re usually just…really uncomfortable. I try to be the person I wish I had when I was growing up.” With her losing her actual parents at a young age and having to spend three years in foster care before Lorelei adopted her - medical care growing up was a scary experience. She had the habit of lashing out and preferring to be alone in foster care. And the therapists she’d been to were….not so nice.

Clearing his throat just slightly before sipping his water, Han nodded along to what she was saying, looking around the room yet again, taking in even more of the details with each glance. It was definitely personal to her, that much was obvious, even if he didn’t know where the objects came from and… well. She seemed nice enough… “They do say that people in therapy make the best therapists.” he pointed out, letting out a cough he couldn’t control but getting himself back together as quickly as he could. He didn’t need pity on top of whatever this was going to bring. 

“I think it sucks that they stop trying to make offices comfortable as you get older. Like, kids get toys and sofas and cushions and TV… why cant adults get cushions and like, actual decent stuff to help us unwind too? Like… fidget toys!” he motioned to the ones on the table, grinning as he leaned to pick one up, “God, I really need to get myself more of these…” Was he stalling? Absolutely. But it seemed to be working.

If this was a diversion she didn't completely notice it. She liked talking enough that a conversation not relating to therapy was enjoyable. she did also LOVE gushing about her family. He was playing right into her weakness. "I didn't expect him to part with them. They meant a lot to him." Her smile grew a little softer. "It means so much that they're here."

She seemed to realize she was the only one talking, and looked up and towards him. "So, why do you think you're here? What exactly can I help you with?"

Mo just smirked. “Well then, if you strangle me, good luck finding another fake boyfriend to take to your mom.” How riled up she was getting almost made him want to laugh. Reminded him of his sisters. “I’m just going to warn you, my family can be….intense. we’re all very close and boundaries are…basically nonexistent. I apologize for that in advance.” He already had a rough idea of what boundaries would be crossed at dinner. Colin would immediately hit on her. Cass would psychoanalyze her. Roxie would give her a tarot reading she did not ask for, and Shanti would probably try to prescribe her some natural remedy to a problem she doesn’t have.

“I could so find another fake boyfriend,” Angie scoffed, but there wasn’t any malice in her voice. The truth is she couldn’t think of any other guy in her life that A) she trusted enough to ask for a favor like this, and B) could actually pass as a believable boyfriend (being an appropriate age and not already married or something). There were a few that filled either one requirement or the other, but only Mo checked both boxes.

“Please. My family’s Italian. Try saying something that will really scare me.” Angie considered herself a social butterfly, but the last time the greater Nelson clan got together for a proper family reunion, she nearly had a nervous breakdown. At least for the holidays, it wouldn’t be that many people - just her immediate family along with her aunt and uncle.

"something that'll scare you? Hmm..." He grinned, pretending to think. "My oldest sister might try to give you a tattoo in your sleep. I mean, she's only done it once. As a prank. Now Colin has the word idiot tattooed on his hip. It's small though." His grin grew into a small chuckle. "You should've seen Colin's reaction. He ran out of the bathroom naked because it wouldn't wash off. He was screaming. Anyways, I'm sure that won't happen to you." He smirked, folding his arms. "Hey, maybe we should have a code. In case things do get too much for you, so that I can excuse us from the others."

Muse : Cass

Scenario : Cass is a therapist, and your muse is one of her patients.

Cass had a wide portfolio to boast about as a psychologist. She'd worked with doctors, criminals, FBI agents and even firefighters. On top of this, she had her normal appointments - the one she took in her office. Cass quite liked her office. It was cozy. Painted in a cool grey with potted planted and a sofa that Shanti had helped her thrift. She also had a lot of fidget toys on the coffee table. They were Finn's, but he'd given them to her to keep in her office. The whole room was scattered with her siblings' personalities. A huge splatter art piece on the wall that Roxie had done back in college. The briefcase Colin was carrying when he won his first case was open on the coffee table and filled with magazines. She'd really made this place her own. It reminded her of home.

Cass took a look at her schedule to reminder herself who else was coming in today, and in what order. She had to prepare herself. The woman was very emphatic and found that after dealing with someone who felt a very certain way, she'd end up absorbing that mood from them. It had caused a lot of problems before she was able to figure out what was happening. But now she had meditation and healing and it definitely helped a lot. She heard the door open and looked up from her computer, just in time to see her next client walk in.

“she had to start working more. It was around the time she opened her own tattoo parlor. It might be also the fact that our mom freaked out every time she ran late after a shift.” She bit her lip, maybe a little uncomfortably. The danger of the job was a heavy truth. But almost immediately, she tried to brighten the conversation again, with a lighter tone. “there was this one time, Roxie went to get drinks with the rest of the volunteers. And her phone died. At one point, my mom was calling every hospital in a ten mile radius.” She said with a laugh. “Do you have anyone who doesn’t approve of your job?” Ah, Cass’s first tactic. She was spinning the conversation back on him.

Buck nodded slowly, understanding that the sister had other things going on for herself. “That’s fair.” He shrugged. 

He listened to the story, chuckling as he knew that his sister would be worried about him if he went missing after a shift and couldn’t reach him. But then again, her brother in law was pretty good at keeping Buck’s safety in mind when in mutual company. He was sure Chimney would keep Maddie posted. 

Her next question had his smile faltering into a chuckle, a dry one as he clasped his hands together and looked around the room for a moment, mentally searching for the right words. He looked at the water bottle in front of them and shrugged. “I have two people. Their opinions shouldn’t matter, but i’m afraid they always will. My perpetually estranged parents.” He clarified, his eyebrows rising and falling to add to the sarcasm lacing his tone. 

Buck knew the topic of his parents would come up eventually. They were the root of his inner most conflicts and insecurities.

She listened to him intently, mentally noting how his posture changed when he spoke about his parents. "If it's a...sensitive topic, we don't have to get into it right now." She jotted something down on her clipboard before promptly changing the subject. "So, what did you do before the firefighting? What did you study in school?" Cass was now clicking her pen kind of feverishly. His negative emotions were obvious and she'd picked up on them. They definitely made her feel a little drained, but she was trying to distract herself. The sensation usually went away after a few minutes. But the temporary discomfort still made her regret being such a empath sometimes.

Buck shrugged once more, his parents were never an easy topic to speak about but because he didn’t know how to describe them other than ‘distant’ and ‘cold’. They weren’t the best parents to him and Maddie for what felt like all of his life and as far back as he could recall. “They just.. I never felt like they cared until it came to scolding us, mainly Maddie. My sister. They never truly felt like they were present. Even when they were in the same house or room as us.”

He wasn’t sure if he was relieved to be changing topics or bothered with the fact that their actions still haunted him. Even with her next question. “Before becoming a firefighter I had many jobs. A construction worker, a bar tender, even work at a ranch with the guys that I later moved over here with. My former roommates. I never felt like I belonged or knew what I wanted to do with my life. So I kinda just… did it all. College feels like a blur, especially considering how many I went to and got kicked out of for misconduct.”

Buck had stories to tell and most of them seemed far fetched, but they were his life and the perfect example of why he had always felt left out or like he didn’t matter to anyone except his sister. “I just felt like I never belonged or I was going to screw things up eventually. And that was all a product of my parents getting into my head when they did bother with me.”

"we grow up with these adults who are supposed to care for us and sometimes they just...don't." Cass said, a sad look on her face. "And it definitely has a long lasting impact on us." She listened to his answer, and couldn't help the grin that formed on her face. "Nice, a fellow troublemaker! I was also a little rowdy in college. Well, more than a little. But still."

"it just takes a bit. Eventually, you find your people. Your real family - blood or not - and you hold onto them. You hold onto them tight. That little voice in your head? The one telling you you're going to screw up? It'll go away eventually. You'll come to love yourself the way your people love you." Despite this sounding like a very generic speech, it was actually super personal. Cass had found her people. In her mom and her siblings and their countless dogs (her mom kind of had a tendency to adopt on sight. Kind of like Batman.)

"I majored in catering for two years before moving to psychology. I realized the messiness of food really put me off. Plus, I am a terrible cook." She spun the conversation around, so it wouldn't feel like a one sided thing. He wasn't a specimen on display for observation here. This was a two sided conversation.
