October 7th, 2014: Lucky Day - Tom Waits
STORY: Don't cry for me as I'm going away and I'll be back some lucky day!
FUN FACT: This song was written for the William S. Burroughs theater piece, "The Black Rider."

October 6th, 2014: Brand New Hero - Reel Big Fish
STORY: I'm going away. Leaving . . . well, technically Wednesday morning. Still, you've gotta find a brand new hero, which is why I've amassed a small army of interim Kevins to take my place while I'm gone. The IKA (Interim Kevin Army) is open-enrollment, so feel free to join in to fill the gap! ONE DAY LEFT.
FUN FACT: Reel Big Fish's "Cheer Up!" was disliked by many fans of the band because the band chose to play songs that weren't all ska songs. Like, how dare they flex their creative muscles?
STORY: So now that winter's on its way, cold wind blowing, give me a reason why I ought to stay because there is nothing here for me. I'll be going - I'm gonna go . . . well, approximately 5000 miles away. Close enough. This is it. COUNTDOWN BEGINS NOW. TWO DAYS LEFT.
FUN FACT: There is a picture of 12 Stone Toddler keyboardist Ben Jones ordering chicken.
October 4th, 2014: Grim Grinning Ghosts (Blarsa Remix) - Blarsa
STORY: Just in time for October, my buddies and I played a spooky scary one-off Dungeons and Dragons to say farewell to me. I don't know how spooky scary the DM wanted it to be (creepy underground mansion, living statues, and a wight who dug graves with our names on them...) but it came out very Halloweeny. And that's the last DnD I'll play for two years.
FUN FACT: This song is a remix of Buddy Baker's Grim Grinning Ghosts, aka the theme to The Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland.
STORY: Standing there for like ten minutes going "what do I want to listen to on my walk home today" provided me with a wonderful answer.
FUN QUESTION?: Is... is Cindi wearing an Apple Watch? In this video? Hadn't those not been unveiled when this video came out?
October 1st, 2014: Mack the Knife - Bobby Darin
STORY: I promised myself no new writing projects before I leave because I'm not going to be writing for two years but I COULDN'T HELP MYSELF. It's a TV pilot for a show called "The Jazz Age" (episode title "The Age of Rebirth") about an old jazz bassist named Doug Washington, playing with Mary Brown and Her Band of Fools, who sixty years later finds a busker named Marcus Fillmore who informs him that jazz is making a comeback. Other characters include Nehem Trawley, Marcus's Jewish-when-he-wants-to-be roommate, and his girlfriend, Other Kate, and Rose and Gil, the housekeeper and cook at the upscale retirement home where Doug and Mary are living. It's super fun! Especially Mary. I love writing her character. "You're always gonna be the same old rake."
FUN FACT: This song was written by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht for their show The Threepenny Opera.
September 30th, 2014: Into The Hollow - Queens of the Stone Age
STORY: no one called me out today for going "deer neer deneenernyow - dee" all day at work today
FUN FACT: Josh Homme of the Queens of the Stone Age is one of the leading figures in the Palm Desert music scene, whose "desert" brand of hard and stoner rock is heavily influenced by psychedelia and marijuana.
September 29th, 2014: Kokomo - The Beach Boys
STORY: "I always forget that Monaco is a country. I keep thinking it's just a city in France." "Isn't it in South America?" "What? No. It's by France. It's almost like part of France. It's basically France." "Then what am I thinking? Some island in like the Caribbean?" "Aruba? Jamaica? Ooh I wanna take ya?"
FUN FACT: Kokomo is the county seat of Howard County in Indiana. Wonderful vacation spot. Top notch.
September 28th, 2014: What It Is - Pure
STORY: I forgot I never made my mom listen to this album until today so I made my mom listen to it today. It's what it is.
FUN FACT: When Generation Six-Pack was first released, it was entitled Generation 6-Pack. Exciting.
Septembe 27th, 2014: Long Line of Cars - CAKE
STORY: In about an hour and a half, my family drove all the way from Tacoma to... Federal Way. (a 17 min drive for those of you unfamiliar with the Seattle area) Wooooooooooooooooooo
FUN FACT: CAKE mention Sacramento in the lyrics to this song. Sacramento is their hometown.
September 26th, 2014: Grab Hands - Stump
STORY: "OK, guys, I think fun Mormon sex talk is over." "Fun Mormon Sex Talk should be the name of your podcast." GRAAAAAAAAAAAB your HANDS puT THEM to My fACE
FUN FACT: Stump gained fame when their single "Buffalo" was included on the iconic C86 cassette. And of course, by "gained fame," I mean, "gained ground in certain circles who were unable to save the band from an untimely demise after the rerelease of the single 'Buffalo' by an eager record label prior to the release of a second studio album but who were able, after the advent of the internet, to provide the former band members with a support net showing their true devotion and fight for not one but two 21st century rereleases of Stump material such that the few lucky thousand with A Fierce Pancake on vinyl were not the only ones who could marvel in the majesty that is Stump."
September 25th, 2014: Low - Flo Rida
STORY: So there I was, listening to indie folk, like I do, and suddenly here's this voice in the back of my head going "SHE HAD THEM APPLE-BOTTOM JEANS" like what
FUN FACT: Flo Rida is a way of saying Florida.
FUN FACT 2: apl.de.ap is a way of saying appletutupap.
STORY: and when you went over the briiiiIIIIiIIIiIidGE... breeEAEAEAEAAK???... I can't understand a word he's saying. All I know is that it's catchy and fantastic and I love it. Slept in a little this morning and it felt good. Haven't done that in a while and won't be doing that for two years.
FUN FACT: The town name "Balthrop" comes from the lead singer's name, Pascal Balthrop. It is not a real city in Alabama.
September 23rd, 2014: Wind of Change - Scorpions
STORY: I heard this song this morning and it sounded so dumb, cheap, and familiar that I felt the need to look up what this familiar dumb cheap song was. Apparently it won Song of the Century on German television network ZDF and is the highest selling single in Germany, solidifying the fact that every country has terrible taste in music.
FUN FACT: This song is about the end of the Cold War.
September 22nd, 2014: Bike Test 1 2 3 - Bomb The Music Industry!
STORY: I feel like I've already done 12 BTMI! songs this year but THIS ONE HAS A STORY THAT'S LEGITIMATE: today, two of my friends decided it would be reasonable and prudent to teach their soon-to-be-Mormon-missionary how to ride a bike, considering I don't know how? Obviously I still have a lot to learn, but I got a little bit of distance a few times. Balance is the issue. My friends don't know how to teach my balance. Anyway, I was super excited and ended up scraping my leg pretty badly. Nothing serious or worrying but enough that I didn't want to risk tearing it up any more. We called it a day. Here's to maybe more lessons in the next two weeks so I'm not like fifteen years behind all the other missionaries when I get to Mexico?
FUN FACT: One of said friends hadn't ridden a bike in several years, but got back on to demonstrate to me that, in fact, it is like riding a bike. You never forget.
September 21st, 2014: The Slunk, The Gutter and The Candlestick Maker - Buckethead
STORY: When you buy random 99c CDs as often as I do, your music collection tends to populate itself with stuff you wouldn't normally listen to. And I'll be honest - my shuffle this morning was boring. I was super delighted when this popped up and made my shuffle like twenty times better.
FUN FACT: The title of this song is a play on the nursery rhyme "Rub-a-dub-dub."
