Trust & Safety Phishing Comments
Date Posted: July 23, 2026
AO3 has recently seen a wave of comments claiming to be made by the "AO3 Trust & Safety team", notifying you that your account has been restricted. These claims are not true. These comments are not being made by real AO3 volunteers and your account has not been restricted.
AO3 volunteers, including the Policy & Abuse committee, will never communicate with you through comments on your work. All important communications from AO3 will be sent through the email associated with your account. More general announcements will be posted on our official social media accounts or published as news posts on AO3 or OTW.org.
If you receive one of these comments, do not click on any of the links in it, reply to it, or interact with it in any way. The links in these comments lead to sites asking you to verify your identity by providing payment information. This is a common credit card scam. AO3 does not ever ask users to provide payment information, and the Policy & Abuse committee will never comment on your works asking you to "complete an identity verification process".
If you encounter one of these comments or believe your account has been compromised, please view the instructions under the cut!
i DO believe that a good writer can make mischaracterization work. oh there's a character who doesn't normally cry? figure it out!! disect the character. make the situation cryable for them. make that character cry ugly tears even if it goes against their very nature. YOU CAN MAKE IT WORK!!!
A great piece of advice I've seen is "Don't fixate about what the character would never do. Think about the circumstances that would drive them to do this, even if they wouldn't normally."
Best advice ever!

Everyone shut up and look at this carving of a whale from the 1200-600 CE Chumash culture
ohhhhhh my godddddd
i like when a piece of media says that an all-powerful character "sees humans as insects" because that really could mean a lot of things. maybe they view us as insignifigant and will squish us under their boot. maybe theyre actually studying and cataloguing us for their thesis paper. maybe theyre campaigning for human protection because we're an important part of their ecosystem. maybe they see a human and go "ew ew ewwwwww someone get the cup and get that FREAK out of my house." .
Could stare into those things all damn dayâŚ

(I think we need something summery and positive. Iâd highly recommend Becky Chamberâs Monk & Robot series of books; a solarpunk dream with a healthy mix of philosophical journeys.)
Iron lung was good btw
maybe Iâm too old but Iâll never understand âracist dni, transphobe dni, homophobe dniâ not because I condone the harmful beliefs these people hold but because I donât think the majority of people who are racist or transphobic or homophobic identify themselves as those things. like, to them they most certainly genuinely donât see themselves as those things. so theyâre not gonna read your dnis and think âoh dear! I have to click away from this blog immediately! phew đŽâđ¨ almost interact with them accidentally offend the op there!â
on the contrary, you are displaying the things that can hurt or upset or trigger you to strangers on the internet just for what? an extra performative point? obviously Iâm not gonna judge people who have these dnis on their blogs because itâs their blogs and what they do is not my business. so I apologize if this post sounds like I am being rude or judgmental or aggressive â sometimes I do have bitchy opinions on the concepts of Things people do, but not about the people who choose to do them. but yeah tbh I really think these dnis are about as useful as putting a âdo not robâ sign in front of a bank or a âthief and intruder dniâ sign in front of a house.
*I get wanting to take a stand. but I still donât think itâs gonna achieve anything, which is just my personal opinion. you do you
what is your minimum criteria for considering something canon?
