something I can’t figure out is if James and Miranda left Nassau before they learned of Thomas’ death, or after? (Couldn’t figure out how to set the text below under a cut on mobile, so this may be a tad long!)
Arguments for before:
- the shot of them leaving London by boat immediately following james’ dismissal from the navy would appear to show that things happened pretty quickly
- the fact that they arrive in Nassau two months after they last saw Ashe in London. If they last saw Ashe before Thomas was taken, then two months for Thomas to be revealed to be dead would seem an incredibly short period given he had entered a healthy man
- Miranda convinced James to leave with her rather than fight longer as per s2e5 - but again not clear to me whether this definitively means they left before any attempt or whether they had remained in London sometime longer.
- Miranda and James were afraid to incur further ill will towards Thomas by remaining in London and decide to attempt to start work on Thomas’ plan so that something might be shown for their work together, esp in the off chance that he is released. When they hear he has died the plan becomes one born more of vengeance than of the virtues of Thomas’ vision
arguments for after:
- It feels far more likely that they would have tried to break him out upon learning that’s where he was sent. they might have attempted to do so indirectly with the use of third parties so they wouldnt be seen to be interfering and cause more trouble. Attempting to do this from Nassau would be impossible to coordinate, and that they would leave for Nassau without trying to break him out rings false to me
- given the situation in Nassau at the time, with the recent murder of the governor and his family, I don’t know whether the plan to redeem Nassau would have been enough of a draw for flint and Miranda to leave England for Nassau over somewhere closer, esp knowing that the man they loved was trapped in England. Is it wrong to assume that they could have remained in England, but remaining in London was no longer an option?
- it is possible - and likely- that they saw Ashe after everything falls apart since he was such a close friend. to disappear suddenly right after his close friend was taken away would be suspicious. he is the one to send them word of Thomas’ death and it seems they still understand Ashe to have been a good friend of Thomas’ when they see him in season 2. My sense is that they became estranged over time but I feel they would have attempted to reach out to Ashe after the conversation with Alfred Hamilton. (Though perhaps not - Ashe may have avoided the encounter and they might have expected his reticence to be seen with them esp given how politically ambitious he was)
All in all, I feel that they did indeed learn of his death AFTER arriving in Nassau, but I am curious about what was on their minds when they arrived, and whether flint turned to piracy BEFORE learning or after - I’m so curious how that shift happened and to understand the specific motivations for each shift deeper into the flint persona
