Saitama always writes his name in katakana in the OPM anime: サイタマ. So I was thinking, what’s the kanji for his name? Because names in anime are often puns, and it sounded like this one probably was.

There is a city and prefecture near Tokyo called Saitama, spelled 埼玉, with kanji meaning “cape” (like shoreline) and “jewel.” Sai- is also the first half of “saikou,” 最高 (kind of like greatest, or most - a superlative).

The Japanese word for egg is “tamago,” which is usually just the character 卵 but can also be written 玉子, which literally means something like “baby sphere,” where the -tama from the place Saitama takes on its other meaning of “sphere” or “ball.”

So if Saitama spells his name 最玉, it basically means Best Egg, and that is fucking delightful.
