Anime showed Orochimaru in a female body, but...
…it’s depicted differently in the manga. When Orochimaru attacked the Chunin Examinations, he’s voiced by a woman in every single one of the dubs.
Here are all the main dubs, and he’s occupying a robust woman’s body in every single one of them. (I even checked the Hindi dub, in which I’d originally watched Naruto on CN; and, frankly, all of them are extremely good in their own way in regard to the manner in which the VAs interpreted the scene, the English one being my personal favorite; and albeit Orochimaru’s Japanese VA is a woman, she sounds more fantastic as a man than as a woman.)
Then I checked the full Japanese fight here, clocked at 12;12 in case the link doesn’t work, (it’s fairly difficult for me to get English Subtitles for this one; I don’t know why as I can’t find them), and Orochimaru refers to the body he took over as one that belongs to a Kunoichi, a post-modern term for female shinobi, which makes sense as he sounds like a woman here, as well. (By the way, there are no historical records of female shinobi combatants; female shinobi were that in a very rudimentary sense and were only utilized for information gathering and poisoning, which is why they were either prostitutes or maids; even their mythical tales of running on water, creating shadows of themselves [bunshins], using elements, etc. in the early Edo Period make no mention of female shinobi combatants; so that could be another reason for Kishimoto to make the work very male-centric.)
The manga, on the other hand, presents a vastly different picture; and we learn that…

mikoto spent more time with the kids and had actual social skills, so we get the impression, from sasuke's memories, that she was this really sweet, gentle woman. but i dont think that has to be the extent of her personality. she can have fire. she can have a little hatred, as a treat. like she was a jonin, but she didnt seem to be on active duty anymore. and she was attending those secret clan meetings too. what does that imply about her feelings about her former ninja career? it doesnt sound like she wanted to go back
