thinking about it (Ed, Winry, and the kids leafing through old photos on a lazy sunday afternoon. their oldest daughter asks if daddy still has that red coat he's wearing in the pictures. Ed thinks about it and figures that thing must be somewhere up in the attic still, so he goes looking for it. he finds it after a while, and it's... so much smaller than he remembers. he sits there with his legs crossed, red fabric bunched up in his lap, pantslegs stained with dust, and stares. Ed always transmuted these coats himself, made them to his exact measurements, and it's so damn small. he... was a child when he wore it. only a little older than his own kids. and that's a perspective he doesn't enjoy; looking back from twenty years on with children of his own, suddenly realising why adults tended to give them those lingering, sad looks. his son is twelve now, and the thought makes him ache. he sits there, up in the attic, clutching that too small coat, for long enough that Winry comes looking for him. he doesn't have to explain, because she gets it. always. everything. she squeezes his shoulders. the metal of his shoulder port remains a solid reminder amidst gently shifting muscle. he forces himself to file all of that away until the kids' bedtime and climbs back down the ladder to start dinner. hours later, Ed wanders into the living room- and stops. Winry is finishing up braiding their eldest girl's hair. gold on red and a smile so bright it makes his eyes water. their daughter is absolutely thrilled when Ed tells her to keep the coat, even though the sleeves reach beyond her little fingertipsâshe'll grow into it, Ed thinks as he kisses the crown of her head. then she'll grow out of it; and she'll wonder how it ever fit her in the first place.)
