LADY BIRD (2017)
DIR: Greta Gerwig
What a charming and relatable experience Lady Bird was.
Right from the very beginning, I could see this film as filled with moments I’d experienced and conversations I’d had before. Fights with parents on those exact same topics (and sometimes, quite literally, the exact same words), fights with friends and struggles with those same friends feeling a bit like an outsider, struggles with not having quite enough materially, the desire to go to college somewhere far away and abandon the past, and boyfriends… and all the trouble they cause.
In the high school and college years, everyone has experienced something like what goes on in this film, and it’s an easily accessible film because it is so relatable. There were many moments where my best friend and I exchanged that knowing glance in the cinema, and I think the film does a great job of really taking the audience back to those moments and making them remember what those difficult teen years were like (and with so much realism). I always wonder how different a film like this would feel to me if I were actually in high school and saw it, and if I would value it even more because of current relatability.
Beyond that, Saoirse Ronan is, as always, wonderful and adorable. Her dresses in this film are exquisite and are things I would buy in a heartbeat. They’re so pink, so quirky, so vintage-looking, and it just adds to her unique charm (and match her hair ♥). The cast, in general, was excellent.
Also, there’s some really awesome shots (some pictured above), but things that stuck out to me: the blue house, that lovely rose garden she goes to with her first boyfriend, and many establishing shots of neon lights around the city. And many more. Directorially, the film does not disappoint.
We are all a Lady Bird at some point.
