giles killing ben is one of the best moments in the show because. he's never been able to protect buffy before. he wants to. ineffectually, helplessly, he tries to. but he can't. he watches her march to her death, she protects him from it. he can't ever save her he can't help her he can't protect her he can barely fucking love her. every night giles sends her to a potential end and every night she come back is more fucking blood on her hands but this! the death of an innocent person, he can take from her. one thing buffy summers doesn't have to hold on her shoulders. it's not as if he hasn't done it before. and he does it so well, brutal and swift, and yet. it still. doesn't. matter. buffy summers falls to her grave.
