In Japanese martial arts, there are two roles when practicing a technique: "seme" and "uke." "Seme" is the one that is practicing the technique, and is the active party in the exercise. "Uke" is the one that is assisting in practicing the technique, and their role is to be the party acted upon in the exercise. "Ukemi," or the art of being an "uke" is one of the first things that is generally practiced in martial arts: how to safely take a fall, tap out from a joint lock, etc.
