S'cuse me, just here to fire some rent lowering shots.
↓ Why SCP Doesn't Want Dr. Bright Anymore ↓
The Explanation:
Dr. Jack Bright is the author's self-insert, also known as TheDuckman/AdminBright. This person ended up using the character & their popularity/power as his author to elicit nudes from others, such as SCP/Bright fans and minors. This would also involve having these people wear the amulet (SCP-963) to fulfill their possession kink.
Right now, the SCP wiki no longer actively uses Dr. Bright, & wants to distance themselves from it. Instead, an official rewrite, Dr. Elias Shaw (by @daisybellejpeg), is being worked on to replace said character.
The Evidence:
- Images from chatrooms & comments (will need to scroll down)
- Daisybellejpeg's doc on Theduckman
- Allegations from another victim
What Can Be Done Regarding This In Fandom?:
- You can inform others, let others know not to use the character and especially why.
- You can use a rewrite, such as Dr. Shaw, or create your own. Just don't simply rename and let every other detail alone. SCP is about creativity. Daisy has outlined some guidelines for making rewrites.
Dr. Myriad, my rewrite (shown above with the gun) can also be read about on this blog & used with some understanding and permission.
- Learning to distance yourself from said character, piece by piece, is always a good start. Name, then design, then anomaly, however you want to take it. But the important part is letting go of Dr. Bright.
What SHOULDN'T Be Done Regarding This In Fandom?:
- Do not simply rename Dr. Bright to Dr. Shaw & be done with it. Dr. Shaw has his own backstory, his own anomaly, and is an entirely different character. Changing nothing but the name defeats the whole purpose.
- Simply saying "I don't support the author" and continuing to use the self insert that baited people into being abused is not a solution, and in fact also makes you a target.
- Do not continue to use the amulet (SCP-963). It was used multiple times for fetish reasons. You can easily change it to something else that isn't a trigger for several victims.
- I should not have to outline why shipping an abuser's self insert with their victim's character is wrong.
Remember that just because someone is no longer publicly active in fandom spaces does not mean they cannot benefit from their planted roots. They have been banned from cons, have an active storefront still (which should be reported if you see them as a vendor) and victims that were not just curated online.
Protect yourselves & don't make yourself another target. As someone who used to love the character, let Dr. Bright die, dammit.
As an extra note, I do not condone harassment. I am posting this on my own blog, & this may spread through word of mouth or tags, but this is my space to do what I want. This is simply for those who wish to learn. Some people may have a hard time of letting go of a character, whether by fictive or personal attachment, but it's important not to villainize & harass, rather encourage on the process of letting go.
