idk as much as you can’t demand other people write what you want to read, i think it’s fair to be upset at the sheer lack of care for or presence of female characters and the prioritization of male characters and mlm relationships over wlw. “pick up a pen and write what you want to see” ok can we talk about misogyny and lesbophobia for a sec though
“fandom etiquette” people when you tell them that the racism and misogyny that is intertwined in their fandom practices/communities/the media they enjoy should be critically examined and treated like a genuine issue that reinforces systemic biases and oppression rather than ignored to preserve their perception that they don’t have to take responsibility for their part in perpetuating racism + misogyny
i feel like when people complain about a lack of female + lesbian representation (for lack of a better word) in fanfiction, the reaction of “just go write it yourself then” pretty severely misinterprets the original argument. people who point out the gender disparity in fan content aren’t usually complaining about the lack of “food,” they’re making a point about the subconscious biases and systemic injustices that lead large amounts of people to be overall disinterested in the stories of women, despite many of them being women themselves. yeah no one can force you to write anything but m/m, and they shouldn’t, but have you seriously never stopped to question why you and the majority of most fandoms write it almost exclusively? why source material with an equal division of gender, or even a bias towards women, will still somehow end up with a fandom dominated by m/m pairings? you seriously think that’s 100% fine and normal and has nothing to do with internalised misogyny?

My way of parsing it:
Every Relationship is actually a specific, unique thing. We invented Shorthands, such as Friend or Husband, to help describe recurring motifs in Relationships. But. The labels are simplifications. They will always fail to adequately contain the entirety of the Relationship.
