For all that the 1800s etiquette guides are--obviously--derangedly sexist from a modern perspective? They're also mindblowing in how casually they will assert things that MODERN DAY CONSERVATIVES would scream and cry and shit their pants about.
"People back then always married young it's natural!!!" Every single 1800s guide I've ever met casually mentions that, of course, you really shouldn't get married before you're at least 20, and waiting until 25 is usually better.
Or, like. Okay here's a long segment:
Just firmly going "it is crazy sexist to blame The Wife for overspending when thirty seconds of asking questions will immediately establish that her husband was outright lying to her about how much money they had. Talk to your wife like a normal person."
Or--okay, here. A section on being honest and not writing love letters in secret, because that's usually a good sign that there's something untoward going on....
....except that he then immediately acknowledges that sometimes, the reason you're hiding this from your parents is that your parents suck. That there are parents who frankly have not earned the right to approve or disapprove of your partner.
(I realize the phrasing there sounds a lot less strong than my summary, but--trust me on this. When you're familiar with the narrative voice of these kinds of books, this passage is downright radical. The mere acknowledgement that if you treat your kids badly, it's your own damn fault when they don't talk to you? I've genuinely never seen that before in this genre. Don't freak out over "properly trained", either. It's just a linguistic shift--at the time, "training" was used the way we would say "raising" a child today. )
"Delete all the nudes and sexts after a breakup or you're a piece of shit" has been the standard expectation since EIGHT. TEEN. EIGHTY. FIVE.
"Men and women being friends with each other is literally normal. Don't be a controlling freak."
Anyway I was wrong the publishing date is actually 1882 so like.
"If you have to abuse a child to keep order in your classroom then you're a bad teacher."
So like @ the modern Republican party, are the "traditional family values" in the fucking room with us right now--
the entire star trek franchise has a generational curse i like to call Realm Reborn Syndrome* wherein every single entry, without fail, starts out at the lowest quality it'll ever be, and steadily improves as the show goes on. early TNG? bad. early DS9? bad. early voyager? bad. early enterprise? well okay that's actually just 2/3rds of the entire show but they still locked in for at least season 3 so my point still technically stands. every star trek show is a newborn babe that has to learn how to walk before it can start being peak. on one hand this is a good thing because every star trek show gets good (or at least tolerable) eventually. on the other hand it's an abysmal thing because it's insanely hard to get people to watch literally any star trek show because most people try to start at the beginning and get turned away and leave and never see it get good. and don't even get me started on how the franchise is operating in the streaming era wherein if your first season isn't pitch perfect you're wiped off the face of the earth.
*it's called this because i'm a dweeb.
i call this one “using tumblr as a person of color”
might update with more images at some point
Some of the ones I've accumulated
The "every umamusume is TMA" thing only gets more true when you consider how often they're considering to be big and dominant. For this reason, we must get more art of Golshi bottoming.

the countermeasure to dehumanisation is not sexualisation. the countermeasure is to treat the other person with respect and dignity actually.
i don't care if you wanna fuck fat people or hairy people or trans people or the elderly or disabled people or whatever. can you treat them like human beings
Evergreen!👇🏾
Race isn’t mentioned in this post, but I’m sure it applies regardless. Take the screenshot in context to both that and the groups mentioned above.
what we say: fandoms, much like every other social part of our life, should have political awareness and be a safe space for fans who belong to marginalised groups, as well as be cautious about media literacy
what tumblrinas hear: fandom is activism, fanfics are activism, shipping is activism, here's my fanart of a fictional white dude punching ICE agents like it's an art trend, i'm not racist because my oc is biracial
star trek is really really good if you ignore the episodes that are violently comically lovecraft tier racist and the episodes that are absolutely incoherent on a basic narrative level and the episodes that are not even slightly veiled post-9/11 american military state propaganda and the episodes that are just kind of mid.
but i swear when it's good it's really good. i swear. you gotta trust me on this one.
no yeah precisely. it's just still really awkward when you rewatch TNG with this exact concept in mind and have to skip over code of honor
i have a story for you, tumblr. last year my coworkers and I were riding in a golf cart at a music festival passing out drinks to people, because the festival had been cancelled that day and everyone was trying to make the best of a bad situation. after some time we spot a guy on the other side of the road dressed as lord farquaad, walking alone. we yell, “LORD FARQUAAD! DO YOU WANT A DRINK??” dude yells an affirmative, walks into the road without looking, gets hit by a fucking car, and goes flying.
I really need you to picture a lord farquaad being dummy yeeted into the air by an incoming vehicle while a golf cart of inebriated, glitter and mud plastered coworkers are full-on horror movie screaming together. before we can even process this, lord farquaad gets up like 🤪 how bout that drink?? completely okay, utterly unphased, red hat and bob wig still locked the fuck in. we check on him several times, all talking over each other, and while he’s calmly and pleasantly assuring us he’s fine, he passes each one of us a tiny jesus figurine. he bestows a “god bless you all” and then resumes his jaunt, drink in hand.
after that we drove in total relieved hysterics, the kinda laughter that only happens when you narrowly avoided catastrophe. and i have NO idea if the driver that hit him even said a word because my entire consciousness in that moment was farquaad, there was only farquaad. I hope that he reads this one day and knows that he is STILL talked about and regarded as some sort of festival cryptid. we are blessed indeed
returning after a few months long break from drawing with the usual ancient greek ladies
Love this, but I couldn't help but notice that their red-figure likenesses are getting even handsier than they are.
The problem with studying the deep ocean is that humans need light to look at things, the depths of the ocean are extremely dark, and what lives there is accustomed to spending most of its time in that darkness. So when we go down there with submersibles and turn on Big Lights to see, we invariably and dramatically alter what's going on, in the same way that it's generally difficult to observe the natural behaviors of terrestrial animals if you whip out a megaphone and shout HEY GUYS WHAT ARE YOU DOING at them first.
A humble snubnose eelpout on its way to the whale fall buffet when some nearby humans give it a quick, unintrusive study:
I put this in the comments but feel it needs a reblog- Check out some of Dr Edith Widder’s work on light in the deep sea! Among other things, she used the bioluminescence of stoplight fish to deduce wavelengths which most deep sea animals can’t perceive and used that to create light filters to be able to film with minimal disturbance! And that’s how we got 25 minutes of giant squid footage!!!!

Finding out Hans Zimmer is a transphobe genuinely had me falling to my knees
Thank you blastybaku for explaining this!/gen
If you've ever heard a movie score and thought "holy shit, this is incredible", there's like, a 50% chance it was Hans Zimmer who composed it.
This is a pretty major letdown, ngl.
Anyways, fuck transphobes, which includes Hans Zimmer, apparently.
Anyway shoutout to John Williams, amazing composer and probably the one who made the other 50% of "holy shit amazing" soundtracks (Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Superman, and incidentally the original Harry Potter theme and score) who famously worked closely with the first openly transgender woman to be nominated for an Academy Award, Angela Morley. He respected her, and so far as I can see, has never made transphobic remarks.
I've said it before but I really do think games should be allowed to age, even if poorly. Sure, Ocarina of Time has some dated models and textures, but the game itself isn't unenjoyable. The worst part about it is the racism (which will not be fixed or addressed, knowing Nintendo). Out of every Zelda game, 2 probably needs a remake the most. I believe Miyamoto said it was the only bad Nintendo game. It can be pretty unfair at times, and is probably the hardest Zelda game to really get into. But I won't pretend companies care about what needs to be remade, moreso what will get them the most money. You want to know how I know this? Because there is a game that needs a remake the most and NOBODY has ever attempted it since the Japanese release. And that game is Mr. Bones for the Sega Saturn
Mr BONES ⁉️⁉️⁉️
(Fr tho hes the actual coolest character segas ever done I think about him alot :"cc)
