Haarkon Adventures
Having hobbies, connecting w others, laughing and smiling and dancing and having a good time, reaching out in place of turning inward, being in love w a person and my friends and the world, nourishing my soul and heart and mind, eating good food, being part of this world—all these things really are so much better than digging my own grave and trying to make a home out of it
the one problem i have with people my age and younger is that a lot of us do not have hands on hobbies. like i have spoken to so many people my age who go to work, go to school and then fuck around on their phone/computer for hours and then ???????? like no wonder ur depressed and have low confidence in urself. u need to get ur hands on something, feed those dopamine receptors! learn how to play guitar, garden, scrapbook, fucking make model trains. i don’t give a shit, MAKE SOMETHING!!
it feels better than drugs when i finish making a thing—and then show it off or gift it.
and then so people my age say to me ‘well—i can’t draw/paint/knit/etc. like you can. my stuff would be terrible.’ yeah, well duh—a part of developing skill is sucking at something and then practicing it over and over and over again until you suck less. u’ll have a hard time feeling lonely or bored when you can’t stop thinking abt a technique you want to try or something you want to make for someone else. making things has SAVED MY LIFE. it gave me a reason to keep living day after day when i wanted to die.
making things improved my generational relationships (when i worked for the newspaper i would talk to customers abt jamming recipes or cross-stitch, one of my grandmas always gives me pattern books and tell me abt when she knitted things for mom, my other grandma is giving me a wedding quilt that HER grandma gave her 50 years ago because she knows i will appreciate it). it also got me likeminded friends who also make things.
take a ceramics class! pick up water colors, bake cakes! learn to work on cars! make soap. DO SOMETHING THAT DOESN’T INVOLVE STARING AT A SCREEN.
she snapped!!!!!
@enjoyskyblue EXACTLY!!!
Even when in comes to your computer I promise you creating things on there will be so good, whether its modding your favourite video game or digital art
Learning how to program and like actually being able to make something, being able to put in all that effort and skill and then at the end go wow look i made this thing!! Was 100% the best decision I’ve ever made
Find the medium of creation that most appeals to you and just start making stuff! No matter how good it is or how long it takes, just keep making things!
I’ve been making things with my hands for basically ever (”how many crafts do you have?” uhhhh) but very little has given me the link between fandom and craft, and the pure satisfaction of making a long fanfic into a handbound paper book. The POWER! No publisher said this could be a book but I made it one anyway. The SATISFACTION! Nobody can stop me!
What I’m saying is you should read this great tutorial by @armoredsuperheavy and consider giving that a go, it’s super fun.
i needed to read this
"Life is impermanent, but that does not mean that it is not worth living. It is precisely because of its impermanence that we value life so dearly."
- Thich Nhat Hanh, Your True Home (2011)
I actually needed to read this
When I tell you I deny my instincts 24/7

it’s the smallest habits. how you spend your mornings. how you talk to yourself. what you read. what you watch. who you share your energy with. who has access to you. that will change your life.
“Wash every bowl, every dish as if you are bathing a baby - breathing in, feeling joy; breathing out, smiling. Every minute can be a holy, sacred minute. Where do you seek the spiritual? You seek the spiritual in every ordinary thing that you do every day. Sweeping the floor, watering the vegetables, and washing the dishes become holy and sacred if mindfulness is there. With mindfulness and concentration, everything becomes spiritual.”
— Thich Nhat Hanh, in “How to Eat”.
I made this honey ricotta cheesecake with almond fennel crumble and honey comb …….
at a certain point you just get tired of your own shit. you have to force yourself to meditate, workout, eat mindfully and read the books to form a routine that gives you a sense of happiness within yourself again. it’s exhausting i know, but you gotta keep fighting for yourself because no one will take care and love you the way you can for own being. this life is not something to go bout so casually, everyday is your first and last time to embrace this moment. this life was gifted to you with a planet to explore and souls to experience. so show up for yourself.
