Though neither are what you’d call particularly maternal, Dovewhisker remembers what it was like to lose a sibling and her mother and Dusklight remembers being looked down upon for being born to a kittypet and they decide to adopt Rootkit to give her the best chance of feeling like a part of GroveClan.

A few generations ago, the Starstones cave that gave leaders their nine lives collapsed. However, each GroveClan leader afterwards had convinced the clan of the necessity of protecting them to maintain the bloodline that founded their greatness. After the clan drove out their last tyrannical leader, Dovewhisker was widely seen as a de facto temporary leader because of her sense of responsibility and organization, even despite her somewhat melancholy personality.

Believing GroveClan’s former tyranny was due to straying from StarClan’s will, Dovewhisker has her clanmates attempt to re-escavate the Starstones from the cave ruins in preparation for the cat who is “truly” fit to become leader. Rootkit becomes extremely loyal to this idea, much more than Dusklight, who begins to have doubts when the Starstones excavation project seems to barely progress. Dovewhisker is also increasingly interested by Rootkit claiming to see ghosts, but doesn’t convince her to become a medicine cat because of the strange looks their current medicine cat gives her. Perhaps he knows what she is or would have been capable of.

Between the wild pigs wrecking havoc on their territory and a rival clan taking advantage of the unstable situation by slowly encroaching on GroveClan territory, this position becomes remarkably stressful to both Dovewhisker and Dusklight. Even so, I imagine that having Rootkit (later Rootshine) would help anchor them and allow them to be more affectionate to each other in a way they were more hesitant to in canon, yet also make them fear failure more as they have more to lose. In all of this, Rootshine remains very optimistic about the situation.

A group of cats who are jealous/distrustful of Dovewhisker’s ambitions begin to form, suspecting her of wanting to become permanent leader herself after the Starstones become accessible and continuing the cycle of tyranny that they had just gotten rid of, especially considering she has an “heir” in Rootshine. One night, this group of cats singles out Dovewhisker and her closest friends, succeeding in killing all four of them, while Dusklight is swept away by the river and presumed dead as well. Rootshine happens to not be present when this happens, but wakes up to find that she suddenly feels more alone than she has ever felt even among a clan full of cats she’s known since kithood. With her parents and leaders of a "new" GroveClan gone, Rootshine believes she must now take up their former responsibilities.

Even though Dusklight manages to return to their clan several years later, I don’t imagine Root will take the aftermath of their deaths/disappearances well…

Types of relationships I wish were expanded on/addressed more in WC:

Grandparents: As someone who's grandparents are a HUGE part of my life, I'd love to see it more in the books. Just, like, a parent letting the grandparents babysit and giving them a set of rules and the grandparent nodding on until they leave and just going 'Nah, ur mom/dad turned out fine' and letting the kids climb the highest tree in camp. Or even just a kid hearing stories about a dead grandparent and wondering what it would be like if they were still around, if they'd be proud of them. Like, this could be so fun!

Older Siblings/Younger Siblings: By this I mean siblings in different litters. Seriously, it is SO easy to forget who and who are are siblings (not like the Erins' are keeping track either-) and I think it would be so fun for their to be a small level of acknowledgement there. Like, just an older sibling babysitting, or a younger one being a brat. Hell, even just older siblings having priority when it comes to mentoring their littles would be so cool.

In-Laws: Seriously, I can barely think of an example of the parents/siblings of a cat to give a single fuck about their mate unless it was an different clan situation. And, if one of my siblings were getting married I'd be like 'huh??? who tf are they???'. I mean, I get that they're all in the same, small community so they all know each other pretty well but still. I'd love to see like a sitcom scenario of a dad grilling a future son-in-law, or sibling-in-law just spilling out embarrassing secrets for the hell of it. You could even have a disapproving in-law for drama! just. I don't care just please acknowledge that your kid just got cat married!!

Bro, I think it's a shame that we learn not much about Oakheart. However, found the things we read in the German Warrior Cats books very interesting. I find the relationship so tragic that it's actually beautiful. In my head there was a lot more going on than in the books, well

I saw a Reddit post a while back theorizing that Aunt Finny could be a hagsfiend like Nyra and I'd say there's a decent amount of evidence (hopefully she's recognizable as Aunt Finny, I think I ended up drawing her a little too similar to how I would draw Nyra so. oops)
