Tashirojima, Japan

Tashirojima is an island off the coast of Japan, and the unique thing about this island is that it’s population of cats outnumbers the human population 6:1. 

Back in Japan’s late Edo-Period the people on the island were raising silkworms for Textiles and the cats chased away the mice that preyed on them. The human population believed that the cats were good luck, and that belief still stands today. 

Today, the fishing industry is what sustains the island, and attracts all of the cats to the shores of the island. A mythology has raised around the cats, and the fisherman have created a shrine in the middle of the island. 

The island is a popular tourist attraction, but they have one rule. No dogs allowed.
