Healthy Home, Happy You - Air Everywhere
Why do we eat better, run longer, and get that extra hour of sleep? We all want to live a long, healthy life. If we want that for our bodies, we would want that for the place we live too, right?
One of the best pieces of advice I have ever received is to think of your house as a living thing. It breathes, needs grooming, and, much to our wallet’s disappointment sometimes, has to have money provided for its care.
How can we keep our wallet and home happy? Let’s find out!
Love is in the Air
Whether it’s hot or cold on the outside, your HVAC is keeping you comfortable on the inside. Be sure to say “thanks” with a new filter! While there may be some wiggle room on the estimate, most home experts recommend changing the home air filter every 4-6 months in the winter while every other month in the summer.
Why change your air filter? Plenty of reasons! First, you are keeping your costs down by not making your system work quite as hard to push air out a dirty filter. Yes, we said dirty. That dirt and dust that is collecting on your filter could get out into your home, making your furniture and also your lungs not too happy.
So an air filter is an easy one to remember when talking about air quality. What about an everyday laundry task?
That’s right! Changing and washing your sheets can actually help the air quality in your home. Dust mites that can make their way into the sheets are not a good combination with those with asthma. Washing sheets with hot water can kick the dust mites to the curb and make you breathe easier!
Also for those of us keeping asthma at bay, keep secondhand smoke out of your home! Secondhand smoke can reduce your air quality and is not a great treat for any guests who deal with asthma symptoms.
Lastly, let some outside in
While insulation is another topic for our next blog, it is important to intentionally let some fresh air flow through your home when the weather is beautiful on the outside.
So open those windows and take a deep breath! Your home will thank you for it.
