I'll start by saying that I don't have a dog in this fight at all - Vampires SMP was my first time learning about a lot of new YouTubers, including Pyro, and he was not one of the POVs I watched. And I didn't know who Maddy was at all since she wasn't in Vampires.
With that out of the way, let me clarify that the fact I don't follow their content doesn't mean I'm looking at this from a completely neutral perspective - I'm looking at this as someone who has been active in fandom spaces for over a decade. My Tumblr account will be 10 years old in a few months, and before that I was fighting in the trenches of DeviantArt and Amino.
So I feel like I can confidently state that the concept of public figures, famous people, or content creators in general being not only aware of but actively engaging in fandom spaces is...well, new. It's just not a thing that really happened before, and when it did, it was usually to the detriment of everyone involved.
The discourse surrounding shipping, fan content and boundaries in general has been going on for a long time, of course. I personally have never agreed with shipping real people together for example (among other things I'm not comfortable with), and I've taken the steps to curate my own space and avoid seeing content that I don't want to see.
I feel like, at the end of the day, that's the whole point. From the minute someone tags things properly and posts it on the internet, it becomes your responsibility to avoid engaging with anything you're uncomfortable with or triggered by. They're not @ing you in it. They're not posting it on a stream chat or comment section. They are not entering your private servers or group chats to show you this content. If they are, you are well within your right to delete, block/ban, and move on.
As someone who is fairly well versed in fandom history, this situation can't help but remind me of Anne Rice. Although I wasn't personally present for it, I'm sure many of you are familiar with The SpecWriter Massacre, or Anne Rice's war on fanfiction. If you aren't, I'll keep it brief, but I do recommend everyone to look into it (YouTuber 'shasha not sasha' has a great video on the topic).
Basically, Interview with the Vampire's author Anne Rice became infamous for her attitude towards fan content, specifically fanfiction, of her characters. Keep in mind this was 1995, so the internet, and the fandom spaces in it, were very different than what they are now. But Anne Rice made a statement in a Q&A that reads, and I quote;
"I do not allow fan fiction. [...] It upsets me terribly to even think about fan fiction with my characters. [...] It is absolutely essential that you respect my wishes."
Does the phrasing ring any bells?
Well, just a few months after this statement, 4 fanfic writers received a Cease and Desist order from Anne Rice's lawyer. And these were not just regular fans, they were people who had been personally involved with Anne Rice and her team before in a positive, collaborative manner. There was no bad blood, until there was.
And after that, her legal team sent a Cease and Desist to Fanfiction.net, ordering that all Anne Rice fanfiction be deleted from the website. Long story short, this caused all fanfiction writers involved with the fandom to go underground, and since Fanfiction.net complied with the order and removed the stories without notifying authors first, countless works were lost forever.
The situation with Anne Rice goes into Copyright law, Fair Use and the legality of fanfiction in general, and that's a whole different issue that I won't get into since it's not super relevant to this discussion (and also a whole lot of people more knowledgeable than myself have already made great essays about it).
But the lesson I want people to take to heart here is: Anne Rice was not the first person who wanted to control fan content on the internet, and she would not be the last. While her actions did have an impact on fandom culture and in how people perceived fan content going forward, I'd like to point to what Anne Rice herself had to say about it in 2012;
"I got upset about 20 years ago because I thought it would block me. However, it's been very easy to avoid reading any, so live and let live."
Again, I understand it was a different time. Content creators were not nearly as present in fandom spaces as they are now, and as such, they did not have the same power that famous people on the internet have today: Every statement matters. The way they word things matters. Everything they say and do will have an impact on other people, whether they want that to happen or not.
I don't think Pyro and Maddie need to change the way they look at shipping and fan content that includes shipping. That's their life, their relationship, and their prerogative. If they feel that they need to step back from fandom spaces for their own mental health and well-being, that would be perfectly understandable.
But no one can control what people draw, write, or think about fictional characters that exist publicly on the internet. As a writer, of course I can relate to the characters you made feeling personal to you - I put parts of myself in every character I've ever written about.
So yes, they can feel uncomfortable about it. They can dislike the fact it even exists. And most importantly, they can and should block people and/or tags freely and without shame. I won't say they should "just get out of fandom spaces" because I think creators also have a right to participate in the communities formed around their works, as long as they make an effort to coexist peacefully with fans and understand fandom culture and etiquette.
I don't really know how to end this post, but I think it's important to emphasize: Fandom is something that has existed since long before any of us were alive, and it will continue to exist long after we're gone. It is an essential part of how people interact with each other and with the world around us. Fandom culture is, in its own way, sacred, and no single individual will change the way it works. So, in the words of Anne Rice herself, live and let live.
AU: Scott and Owen both die in Oakhurst, their ghosts haunting the territory for centuries, never allowed to leave. Perhaps Louis haunts the grounds too, perhaps all three fall in love. I wonder what they'd do when humans show up in their territory. Would they feel protective and enraged over their territory, like some ghosts do? or would they try to help the humans leave? Perhaps their opinions differ from ghost to ghost.
no dude it's so cool how attached you are to that character who is singled out and ostracized due to the external monstrousness that clashes with their internal spark of humanity. and i love how drawn you are to themes of horror and love, nature versus nurture, otherness, isolation, and the abject. i bet you have normal feelings about your own personhood
i completely respect the updated boundaries from pyroscythe and millkberry but if i may be honest a second, i am terrified of the potential for witch hunting in what was previously a very safe fandom
the line between platonic and romantic is so thin, i’m so scared for artists and authors getting flamed because they created something completely platonic that got misinterpreted because people see character a and b standing next to each other and go wow must be a ship!
don’t get me wrong, pyro is one of my favourite streamers, but even i can admit that the comments about spies and sending people after “repeat offenders” rub me the wrong way
policing something as nuanced as this has some scary potential for attacking innocents and scaring off your own fandom if they feel monitored like this to an extreme you don’t get in any other fan spaces
again i respect the creators and their boundaries, i just don’t think this kind of enforcement is a good idea and honestly i hope they retract that particular statement about the “birds”
