Carlo Giuliani was a CGIL trade union activist whom was shot and killed on 20 July, 2001, during a protest against the 27th Group of Eight Summit in Genoa, Italy. The protesters and Italian police clashed and at one drastic point during the protest, a police van became stuck. The van was then attacked by a few of the protesters and the police, who were armed, shot Carlo Giuliani point blank in the face. Giuliani was then ran over by their Land Rover.

The case is shrouded in controversy due to the fact that the police officers in question were not charged with his murder. They claimed that they had not intended to kill Giuliani and that they were acting in self-defence. An investigation revealed that Giuliani was still alive when he was ran over by the Land Rover, but alas, the driver was not charged with his murder either. As well as the senseless and brutal murder of Giuliani, the police savagely attacked a number of other protesters as they relaxed in a nearby school which had agreed to house them. The police had even threatened to rape them as they sang fascist songs to the protesters.

Not only is this a case of severe police brutality but is also a case of a huge cover-up in which a protester, whom was brutally murdered, received no justice.
