I didn’t know how to describe my feelings about the HIMYM final until I saw.
Yaass JK Simmons Yaass
What did you do at work today?
Oh not much, just watched Pride & Prejudice
A Tasting Menu of Female Representation:
The Bechdel:
two or more women talking to each other about something other than a man
The Mako Mori:
at least one female character with her own narrative arc that is not about supporting a man’s story
The Sexy Lamp:
a female character that cannot be removed from the plot and replaced with a sexy lamp without destroying the story.
Chef’s Specials:
The Anti-Freeze:
no woman assaulted, injured or killed to further the story of another character.
The “Strength is Relative”:
complex women defined by solid characterization rather than a handful of underdeveloped masculine-coded stereotypes.
Somebody show this to the Supernatural writers.
I’m normalizing TV. I am making TV look like the world looks. Women, people of color, LGBTQ people equal WAY more than 50% of the population. Which means it ain’t out of the ordinary. I am making the world of television look NORMAL. I am NORMALIZING television. You should get to turn on the TV and see your tribe. And your tribe can be any kind of person, any one you identify with, anyone who feels like you, who feels like home, who feels like truth. You should get to turn on the TV and see your tribe, see your people, someone like you out there, existing. So that you know on your darkest day that when you run (metaphorically or physically RUN), there is somewhere, someone, to run TO. Your tribe is waiting for you. You are not alone.

My writing insecurity has become a constant companion in my life....it’s sad.

Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is nonexistent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery—celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from—it’s where you take them to.

Today is the day they should come out to the world and own their love.
Joe Biden...I’m gonna miss you.
Change has come
Growing up I was very close to one of our neighbors. His name was Mr. John. He was my parents age and lived in a house toward the front of our neighborhood with another man...his partner. I always knew they were in a relationship like my parents and it never register that it could be wrong to me. Like my parents their love for each other was valid. For the first 9 years of my life Mr. John was like a surrogate father to me. My own worked late nights and when he was home...had other issues. Growing up I remember Mr. John happily volunteering to tuck me in and read me a story. I sometimes think he happily did this because being gay and living Georgia having his own child was a far off dream. He taught me how to read, how to swim, but most importantly to be proud of who I am. When I heard the supreme courts decision today I thought of him. A few years ago i never thought I would see this in my life time. And now all I can think about is that someone who was so important in my life is finally getting the rights he deserves. Mr. John thank you for teaching that love is love, for teaching me acceptance of myself and everyone around me, and for being a father to a little girl who needed one. I am bursting with happiness for you and the gay community. This is an amazing moment in our history and I am in awe of us. ***He eventually did have a child. He adopted a little girl with his partner about a decade ago. I can honestly say I have never seen a child so loved.
Useful Confession #9
If you read a script for a movie you love, you will immediately grasp how much of what you experienced was NOT ON THE PAGE.
So read a bunch of scripts from movies you love. Screenwriting is not hand-holding and spoon-feeding.
girl power in my mind is to let girls be exactly what they are. let them be angry. let them be resentful. and rebellious. let them be hard and soft and loving and sad and silly. let them be wrong. let them be right. let them be everything because they are everything. – amy sherman-palladino (x)
