The Crimson Sun and Violet Moon

The sun is warm from where Virgil is sitting in an old oak tree. The warmth from the mid-day sun and the soft rustling of the leaves lulling him to doze off. Most days are spent like this. Calm and peaceful. After succumbing to sleep, Virgil dozes off for a few hours.
Something into the air changes, subtle and barely noticeable to those who aren't connected with the nature around them. With a start, Virgil wakes from his nap in an uncomfortable stillness.
Something feels off. The forest knows when a change is happening, whether good or bad. The forest knows everything, and Virgil knows the forest. His forest. His home. And something is definitely wrong. His wings puff up as his anxiety starts to steadily raise.
Virgil has seen the seasons come and go over many moons. It's quite… too quiet… too still.
How long has it been since it's been like this? Are the seasons changing? No… it's not that. The leaves are lush and vibrant. Mid summer. It should not be this quiet.
“Virgil?” A voice calls out
Startled out of his thoughts, Virgil looks over in the direction of where the voice came from. Logan.
“Virgil, where have you been?” His deep indigo feathers ruffle in annoyance, but his eyes hint to the slight concern he has been feeling.
“H-huh?” Virgil blinks a few times, staring at Logan in confusion.
“Oh my goodness, Virgil. You vanished and didn't bother informing me beforehand.” Logan sighed, running a hand through his raven black hair. Looking up at Virgil with a mildly exhausted expression before ruffling his feathers again.
“Sorry, Lo.” Virgil mumbles as he starts ringing his hands. “It's just…” gosh he doesn't even remember splitting up with Logan in the first place. What was he going to say? He has no doubt that Logan has already picked up on the unnatural stillness of the forest. Almost all Avian folk are very in tune with the land, Virgil included. But how does he explain how the atmosphere is unsettling him so much? “...it's just… I wasn't paying much attention where I was going”
Logan lets out an exasperated breath before leaning against the oak tree. “Okay… just…” he runs his hand through his hair before fiddling with the ombre purple feather he wears around his neck “don't go too far from my side, okay?”
“Yeah yeah, it's not like you tell me every day” Virgil rolls his eyes as he makes his way down from the branch he was sitting on.
Logan huffs, feigning annoyance. It's true though. He does tell Virgil to stay close whenever they leave their small clearing. He just doesn't want anything to happen to him. Ever. Not wanting his partner out of reach since their encounter with some travelers coming through the forest a few years ago.
“Come on, let's go back.” Virgil starts walking in the direction of their clearing. Something feels wrong.
Something is going to happen and he wants to put it out of his mind for as long as possible. Nothing good will come from whatever is coming… nothing at all.
