"What was that, what did you do?" The Princess Alana demanded as soon as they were alone.
"I was only making right the wrongs of this world. And what better way to do that than to eliminate those who were responsible for all that destruction."
"You killed them. I trusted you, and you betrayed me by committing such a lowly act of violence. Treason, Cecil. I am now an accomplice to treason."
"I dealt with the situation as best I could."
"By," Alana veered in on him and lowered her voice to a harsh whisper. "...murdering an entire cabinet of ministers that report to the king?"
"Their corruption had put the lives of thousands at stake, Alana. I'm no villain, vigilante at best, and I did a great service to our people through whatever means necessary."
Alana went silent and lowered her head, twisting and entwining her fingers. Cecil's shoulders sagged and he grasped her wrist lightly. A jolt went through his body as their eyes met, she'd stopped twiddling her fingers and gone completely slack. Cecil let go her hand.
"You're not an accomplice to my crime, Alana. I'll tell them it was all me. I'll even let you arrest me this time." He said with a wry grin. "Your position will not be compromised."
"I don't...care about that." She scoffed, but he could hear the break in her voice. "I wish you'd...told me."
"I couldn't."
"And why ever not?" She glared at him arms crossed.
I have to take accountability for my actions alone without dragging you into my messes.
"The plan wouldn't have worked otherwise." He rolled his eyes not meeting hers.
"Oh, so you didn't trust me or my ability to be discrete?"
Of course I trust you. But doing right by you was more important than telling you the truth.
"I guess I don't."
"You're a liar, soldier." She fumed. "How dare you do this?"
Cecil just stared at her.
"Get out of my sight." She said when she couldn't bear it any longer.
"Yes, Your Highness." He bowed and walked away from her.
He didn't look back once. Soon, it was just her alone, surrounded by tapestries when she finally allowed herself to sink to the floor and weep, about so many things, maybe everything but most of all the tender look in his eyes before she'd sent him away.
