Hi!May I ask something? Is there a diff between the persdonalities of the characters in fmab and in fma03?
Hmm..it’s kinda hard to write down my thoughts but I’ll try. MAJOR SPOILERS ahead by the way, in case you haven’t watched either series!
The answer (IMO) is both yes and no. The main characters are Ed and Al (and Winry and Roy a little?), and they start in both series acting basically the same, but because the events they go through are different, it shapes them a little differently by the end. Also, the context and themes of both animes are very different. FMA focused on people and choices, while FMAB focused on story and fantasy. So FMA!Ed+Al make perfect sense in their world, but would seem a little out of place if you dumped them into FMAB’s world because it has a different atmosphere and a different focus, and vice versa.
By the end of FMA, Ed becomes more mellow, realistic(but still retains the ability to hope and dream) and less impulsive. For two years, all he had to keep him motivated was his past, so he lived in it. Al had had to live two years alone with no family - his brother, father or mother were all gone, so as a result he had become very independent and strong, but also very stubborn. You could tell in Conqueror of Shamballa that he didn’t listen to anyone and people had given up trying to make him listen.
In FMAB, Ed retains his cynicism regarding some things but remains a very hopeful, forward-looking person. He doesn’t live in the past. And yes, he’s still impulsive.:D Al becomes a strong, selfless person with the patience of a prophet.
As for Winry, i found her different in both series from the beginning. Winry in FMA was the boys’ childhood friend and adopted family, but any romantic clues between her and Ed were at best subtle. Romance was very obvious in FMAB though. Also, in FMA she took more after her granny Pinako. When a situation was serious, she rarely cried - she acted. Ed felt comfortable confiding in her, and she gave sound advice. The way she handled the truth of her parents’ death is heartbreakingly admirable. In FMAB, she starts off as a very outwardly emotional kid and almost uncomfortably so, but gradually matures.
Roy in both series is basically the same, but the ghosts of his past haunt him more deeply in FMA, and he’s more invested in the Elrics’ well-being on a personal level. In FMAB he ploughs on and progresses in rank to get close to his dream of becoming Fuhrer, whilst in FMA that dream is tremendously difficult because to save the country, he assassinated the Fuhrer and was stigmatized. Then the grief of Hughes’s death followed by Ed’s disappearance pulled him down into depression.
This turned out an essay. I hope I didn’t bore you to sleep!
Today I helped a family new to the United States get library cards. After giving them the rundown on what a library membership means, I showed the kids the children’s area. The mother told them they could each check out two books. The smallest child, a girl of seven,...
