Lack of an Element Tendencies/How to Compensate
Lack of Fire
Tendencies Lacking confidence, enthusiasm, optimism, and creativity. Difficulty finding inspiration and motivation within self. Inability to face challenges head-on and overcome conflict. No will to expand or test freedom– may be a lack of freedom.
How to compensate A practical and physical approach is to include more fiery components to life. This can look like intentionally incorporating energy, dietary changes, and warmth into one’s life. Exercise, eating red, spicy, or Martian foods, sunbathing, hiking, camping, laughing, burning candles, and being around actual fire are a few examples. In addition to practical approaches, the fire deficient individual would greatly benefit from practicing faith. Spirituality brings about hope and with hope comes inspiration and optimism. This individual would also benefit from stepping out of their comfort zone and challenging themselves (obviously in a paced, healthy manner). Actually carrying out a dream or idea they’ve been holding off, going somewhere on a whim, and putting themselves out there to receive praise and criticism are some examples of this. Testing and actively practicing creativity will aid inspiration and their ability to be creative as well.
Lack of Earth
Tendencies Instability, lacking patience, rhythm, rationality, and grounding. Feelings of incompleteness. A tendency to dissociate or appear to “have their head in the clouds,” derealized and depersonalized.
How to compensate Finding realignment with the self in very physically interactive activities. This can look like physical or sensual closeness with others, getting in touch with nature (such as gardening), physiotherapy, and physically creative arts (such as painting or pottery). Whether it’s feeling skin, dirt, clay, or paint, any sort of reminder that the earth deficient individual is existing in the physical here-and-now is beneficial. Incorporating routine, mindful decision making, taking on responsibility. Being able to feel the vibration of their body through singing or dance can aid rhythm and help them feel more connected to their body. A bit of dietary focus; eating healthy or foods that feel “right” for their body. Meditation and rest. Accepting patience where patience is needed; breathing exercises can aid one’s impatience and to some extent distractions are helpful as well as long as they aren’t unhealthy distractions. Surrounding themselves with level-headed individuals.
Lack of Air
Tendencies Lacking perception, expression, and objectivity. Lack of foresight. Overly concerned with limitations. Inability to be self-differentiated; feels deep burdens from certain social interactions and past actions, inability to detach. Difficulty with self-reflection.
How to compensate Forcing oneself to self reflect through journaling or meditative practices. Relational therapy and “checking in” with oneself to aid differentiation. Challenging one’s beliefs and surrounding oneself with multiple world views. Not limiting perception and knowledge; being open to new ideas and intentionally learning new things. Engaging in discussion without the motive of winning the argument or being overly in opposition. Asking questions. Practicing cooperation. It’s really important for the air deficient individual not to compare themselves to others if they are actively trying to work on self-differentiation; they will likely encounter people who oppose them or belittle their point of view and they will need to become the “bigger person” in this instance. Avoiding comparisons in a broader sense is beneficial as well because of the tendency to be concerned with one’s limitations. Finding new modes of expression; whether that be a new language such as sign language, expressing oneself through art such as comedic acting, or expressing oneself through how they present themselves such as they way they dress. Practical incorporation of air element can look like breathing exercises, plenty of clean air, aromatherapy, and finding oneself entranced by wind in nature (cloud gazing, for example).
Lack of Water
Tendencies Not in touch with emotional wellbeing (of self and others), lacking emotional vulnerability, awareness for others, intuition, and privacy. Tendency for oneself to go to secondary emotions. Internal toxicity.
How to compensate Therapy, getting in touch with one’s true feelings. Acknowledging and honouring emotions instead of dismissing them. Being receptive to one’s emotional needs and wants. Trusting gut instincts. Practicing compassion for self and others. Charity. Keeping the body hydrated and flushed from toxins; avoiding toxins to the body. Activities that break a sweat can aid internal toxicity. Practical and physical approach includes incorporating water elemental things; drinking lots of water or hydrating foods, swimming, being near bodies of water, and keeping one’s skin moisturized. Allowing oneself to keep things secret or private, with the exception of feelings as the water deficient individual would greatly benefit from expressing their true emotions. The allowance for privacy refers more-so in the sense of aiding this individual’s autonomy and right to keep certain information secret.

Shadow Work
Origins, Meaning and Utility
The Structure of the Mind
Carl Jung theorized the existence of three levels/spheres in the human psyche: the Ego, representing the conscious mind, the Personal Unconscious where memories are contained and the Collective Unconscious, where all knowledge and experiences of the species are shared.
Each Sphere has in it a certain number of Archetypes, used to better describe the components of those structures, and the Shadow is one of them.
What is the Shadow
The shadow can be seen as a instinctual or primitive part of ourselves, it exists as part of the unconscious mind and is composed of repressed ideas, weaknesses, desires, instincts, and shortcomings.
It is this archetype that contains all of the things that are unacceptable not only to society, but also to one's own personal morals and values, normally going against social norms and rules as well as what we personally consider right.
The Shadow is often described as the darker side of the psyche, representing wildness, chaos, and the unknown, and it is common for people to deny this element of their own psyche and instead project it on to others.
The Shadow in Witchcraft and Benefits of Shadow Work
Art: Unknown
The Shadow, in witchcraft, can represent The Unknown, hidden depth of ourselves. Speaking in terms of energy, this is an area that can be a deep source of energetic issues, because it’s locked up in the dark and always striving to reach the light.
To not work with one’s Shadow is to make it greedy and aggressive, as well as denying a big part of oneself, making everything a half of a whole.
Through that brief explanation, we can already establish the importance and role of the Shadow in witchcraft, and with that in mind, comes the concept of Shadow Work.
Shadow Work can be seen in a number of practices, meditation, trances, inner journey’s, lucid dreaming, astral travels, spells and divination.
The method can change, but the principle is simple: Centering your intent to self discovery, self knowledge and self acceptance.
Working with one’s Shadow is not only beneficial to one’s craft, as it allows one to get in touch with their intuition as well as allows for easier connection with one’s guide/guides, but it also allows for healing and acceptance of one’s feelings and needs.
Think of all aspects of life as a wheel. If there is one part bent, the wheel can turn, but with more effort. If the owner spends time fixing that bent part, the wheel will turn in a much more smooth manner.
That is what happens when you take the time to do Shadow Work, you have to put in effort, and most of the time it’s not easy, but once done, all other components on the wheel of your life will be relieved to move on without that obstacle that makes their job harder.
The Shadow is not evil, as evil is just a moral compass invented by humans. It is a part of one’s nature, and to deny it is to supress a connection with yourself.
Take the time to know and accept your shadow, and you’ll see that life will be a little easier.
