What does the food in Fallout taste like?
I’ve been doing more cooking in Survival mode then I ever have in previous fallout games, and I’ve also been reading the excellent manga “Dungeon Meshi”, which includes several instances of characters cooking and eating fantasy monsters. It got me wondering: What does the food in Fallout taste like?
Here’s some fan-theories from me:
Bugs in General: Should be cleaned and cooked thoroughly before eating to avoid risk of disease. Can be cooked in the exoskeleton to seal in juices and prevent drying out.
Bloatflies: Very soft and pillowy like brie, or firm tofu. Flavor can vary based on fly’s diet, from somewhat bitter to overwhelmingly vinegar-like in both taste and smell. Definitely needs to be cooked thoroughly to avoid food poisoning. The maggots are probably more succulent and flavorful.
Radroach: Like a big slab of greasy chicken or turkey. Rather bland, but absorbs flavors well, so season generously with salt and spices.
Radscorpion: As long as you don’t eat the stinger, it’s not poisonous. Has texture similar to crab or shrimp, with a more nutty flavor. Best cooked by stuffing some mutfruit wedges under the shell to add a bit of sweetness and keep the meat juicy.
Bloodbugs: Having subsisted mostly on blood, bloodbug meat has a strong metallic taste and a gritty texture, similar to liver or blood pudding. Best served with something spicy to balance it out.
Mirelurks/Fog Crawlers: Probably tastes just like crabs/crayfish in real life, but better (Grandma Sparkle in FO3 says it’s the “finest meat you can get”). More buttery and savory, with the claws especially having the best balance between flavor and tenderness. Can be cooked in many different ways, but the most popular is to steam it with some beer or Nuka-Cola. Softshells are especially popular, but best done grilled.
Deathclaw: Lots of lean muscle makes Deathclaw meat rather firm, like dark meat chicken. Best prepared by tenderizing/marinading it first, or stewing it on a low, slow flame. Given the reputation of deathclaws, this meat is probably eaten more as a status symbol than an everyday dish.
Pre-War Food: Probably tastes more or less just like it did 200 years ago- I assume that most of them have enough preservatives to mummify a small dog. Salty, starchy, greasy, sugary- whatever applies best. Probably not the best thing to eat regularly, but would be a good source of comfort food at the least. After fighting for your life all day in the Wasteland, it’s good to kick back by the fire and enjoy a delicious Fancy Lads Snack Cake.
