parents are allowed to straight-up torture their kids with zero consequences. they can withhold food and water, lock you out of shelter, confiscate your belongings, bar you from human contact, attack and harm you and exert complete control over your physical appearance. and this is just the norm. if you speak out against it you're seen as a delinquent or a predator. even otherwise progressive people get uncomfortable with the idea of dismantling the nuclear family unit because they still see it as the best way to keep kids safe when that simply couldn't be further from the truth. it's evil.

you know its a bit odd to me that rapebaiting is just not discussed at all? i would be really interested im some kind of real academic research on it but the only time i see it mentioned its on the dark holes of reddit. i get that its uncommon, but i think its identifiable enough? ive never participated in rapebaiting, but lurking on cnc spaces it was something that immediately became noticeable to me so it cant possibly be that obscure.

it's something that i don't think many ppl know abt at all outside of the ppl who do it. and if ppl do know it exists, they don't want to talk abt it, bc it's such a taboo. we've spent so long establishing that ppl don't want to be raped, that rape is bad, that you should not, under any circumstances, rape someone. so what does it mean that there are ppl trying to get raped? i think ppl are more comfortable with it as a form of self-harm (tho still not comfortable with it), but when it's presented as a form of pleasure-seeking? that's unacceptable. but it's been both for me.

out of curiosity, i googled the word "rapebaiting" and found a lot of stuff that really disturbed me. i found an incel forum, for example, where an incel screenshotted r/rapekink and used it as proof that rape is rarer than ppl think bc women actually do want to be raped. that women rapebait in order to hurt men. this is, i think, an obvious misunderstanding of what rapebaiting is. but it's still here, on my screen: men with screenshots of women craving rape. still, incels are men who have chosen hatred. they will use any "proof" possible to decide it's okay to rape and abuse women. this isn't, to me, a reason why we should pretend rapebaiting doesn't exist.

i also think that not a lot of ppl, proportional to the population, rapebait. and ppl might do it, but not have a word for it. i was definitely doing it before i had a word for it.

i did a quick google search, and i couldn't find any studies on rapebaiting. i would be curious, tho, if there ever were any.

tbh, it's not something i'm proud of doing. it feels like a really dark thing i've done. esp lately, i've been dealing with a lot of shame around it. i do feel somewhat outside of the world, in a way. bc it does feel so unusual? yet i know there are other ppl who've done it! i wish we could talk abt it more, that it were discussed more in relation to rape. the silence is painful sometimes.

It’s weird what people consider exercise. I remember I’ve seen like, people post data about how many steps people get and it said though it excluded steps from work. Or when I was at a doctor and they were asking about my level of activity and specifically wanted to know if I was like you know, going to a gym, going on runs or walks, biking, and I said I was mainly active through my work which was being a janitor and they didnt consider that to be physical activity like sheer amount of steps, carrying things, pushing things, running around, etc didnt mean anything because after that I didnt then go on a bike ride or go to the gym. I even tried to explain the amount of activity and exertion that went into the work but it didnt seem to matter.

Was just thinking of that bcuz I was just doing some gardening and It’s a lot of work carrying around pots and bags of dirt and digging in the hot sun.

with my chronic pain, a lot of doctors (and my relatives) will just ask "do you exercise?". i say no, i don't exercise, because i'm in constant pain, however i did get a lot of exercise when i was younger, since i was at school (walking to and from school, walking around school, going up and down stairs, doing PE, etc), but my pain was still present (and worse) when i was at school, getting exercise.

but either that's too complicated for doctors and relatives to understand, or there's some sort of ableism/bias going on, because all they do is call me lazy and tell me to exercise 🫩

last night was watching a youtube video w my boyfriend where this woman was talking abt how it's ok to depict rape in fiction obviously but it has to be distressing for the reader and v clear that the rape is not in any way being romanticized i mean i know i talk abt this all the time on here but sometimes you just want to settle in with your romanticized depiction of rape. sometimes you want to have fun with it and you don't want to be reminded THIS IS WRONG by the author every page you want to be like awwww when the rapist and the victim fall in love <3 when the victim has to enjoy it bc there's no choice <3 like sorry We Live in a Society where rape is inescapable for many ppl ofc there are going to be cultural artifacts that reflect that inescapability by romanticizing the cage

her argument was that she knows fiction is fiction but that romanticized depictions are rape culture. but it's complicated. absolutely romanticization of rape arises from rape. it could not be romanticized if it didn't exist. it is, literally, a culture of rape that creates the conditions for such writings. but if we cut off any reaction to rape that is not pure horror, we disallow so many representations of reality. how can we address rape if we ignore the wide swath of responses to it? "this is rape culture" yes! it is rape culture. i agree. but not the way she means, where it becomes a call to terminate all the writings that dare discuss rape with any sense of pleasure. there are ppl who find pleasure in rape. this is something that shouldn't be ignored

I think this moral confrontation explains a lot of why audiences are so hostile to romantic/sexual pleasure elements in rape depictions out of principle. What does it mean that other people find this hot or romantic? What does it mean if I do? Could I, or others, possibly experience sexual or romantic pleasure in the situation being portrayed? What does this mean for my understanding of abuse, trauma, and assault? Those are difficult questions with difficult answers. Maybe if we all close our eyes, it will just disappear, right? It's much more palatable to pretend an unsavory part of reality isn't there, which, as OP alludes to, ends up sustaining the rape culture allowing these realities to exist in the first place, because if we can't talk about it in real life, and we can't talk about it in fiction, then how are we supposed to talk about it.
