On censorship and really awful content

You don’t have to be happy that something exists to agree it shouldn’t be censored. You don’t have to like or want or be in favor of the thing you find repellant to agree it shouldn’t be censored. You just have to agree that the cost of setting up a system of censorship is worse than the cost of letting the awful thing exist.

I don’t want people writing creepy romanticized porn that propagandizes in favor of child molestation. I do want stories like Lolita to exist, even if people with poor reading comprehension mistake them for creepy romanticized porn that propagandizes in favor of child molestation. (A lot of people don’t seem to know how unreliable narrators work, miss several contextual clues, and…apparently don’t read the end?). And I don’t trust a system of censorship to distinguish between the two. Censors, even when they don’t have malign agendas (which they often do), are flawed humans who bring their own biases to things, and I don’t think they should be trusted with that much power.

I don’t want people writing stories that romanticize abusive relationships, presenting them as positive and encouraging abuse victims to believe they’re responsible for their abuser’s feelings. I also don’t want to force people to not write them or not read them. The violation of human autonomy involved in taking away someone’s right to read and write what they want is far more obscene than any story anyone could write.

I don’t want people writing things that I think have no value and damaging messages. I also have humility about the limits of my judgment, and my imperfect ability to judge other people’s experiences. I don’t know what they’re taking away from a work of art. I don’t know what they need. I don’t know the perfect social messages to send, or the best way to live. I have ideas, and I think they’re pretty good ideas, but I’m smart enough to know I could be wrong. I am an imperfect human, and my right to tell you “Don’t write this” or “Don’t read this” needs to be limited by your right to ignore me.

So even when I don’t content to exist, I don’t want the right to have it censored.
