Personal Narrative

Hey, I’m Jacob Magellan Portman. In the novel “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar children,” by Ransom Riggs, Riggs tells my story. The novel starts off with giving background information of my relationship with my grandfather, He always used to tell me stories about fighting in a war, being in the circus, knowing peculiar children and more. Then my experience with getting bullied from believing his stories eventually led me to stop listening to his stories is explained. When I go to my grandfathers body when he died, I saw a weird creature with tentacles coming out of it’s mouth. I kept on getting nightmares of that creature so I was forced to go to a therapist. My therapist thought it would be helpful if I helped out cleaning out his grandpa’s home, then one day my aunt Carole found a book she thought was meant me Jacob from grandpa since it did have my name in it. Inside I found a letter from a woman, Miss Peregrine. I had a feeling she knew something about him. The letter came from Cairnholm Island. After getting my uncle to change his mind about inviting me to spend the summer with his family and my therapist recommending me to go visit the island to get closure, I was able to go with my father. The first few days I found nothing, just an empty house. But when I saw that peregrine falcon one morning something told me to go back to that house. While trying to open this suitcase I found in what I guessed would be my grandfathers room, it led me to the basement where I met Emma. But before I could say anything she ran away so I followed her through a tunnel into a whole different time, September 3rd, 1940. I finally met Miss Peregrine along with other peculiar children. The reason they were in this time loop is to prevent their deaths on September 4th and to hide from monsters that eat children with peculiar traits to look human. The same monsters I had nightmares about, hollowgasts. The hollowgasts are starting to find the time loops and are taking peculiars. Others around the world need help, so we plan on finding the rest of the hollowgasts, and helping the other peculiars.

Journal Entry #4

So much has happened. I can see things that no one can see, I saw a hollowgast, I KILLED a hollowgast, Miss Peregrine can’t turn human and I’m officially staying with Miss Peregrine and the children. Miss Peregrine needs help and so does her friends. There are hollogasts all over the world breaking into time loops finding more children with peculiar traits and eating them. If she can’t turn human, what are the children going to do? I also found out that grandpa Abe had a peculiar trait too. He could see the hollowgasts and so can I. Apparently no one else can see the hollowgasts, so I can help the children fight against them by telling them where they are. When Martin, Emma and I encountered a hollowgast I told them where it was to help them fight it. Fortunately we were able to defend ourselves and we killed it. The monsters have white eyes, that’s how you know but a lot of the time they wear contacts to disguise themselves. Now the peculiar children and I are all on row boats on our way to find Miss Avocet. Miss Avocet is Miss Peregrine’s friend and is being kept by the hollowgasts at some kind of concentration camp. Before I left of course I tried to say goodbye to my dad, but he passed out. So I had Emma leave him a note promising I’ll be okay. I do feel a little bad for leaving my family behind, but I feel like it’s my destiny to do this especially since my trait would help a lot. Plus no one really understood me back home, I belong here.

Journal Entry #3

The past few days after meeting Miss Peregrine and the children have been very overwhelming. I met grandpa’s ex lover, Emma which is weird because I might start to have feelings for her too. We kissed and at first I wasn’t sure what to feel, it’s really weird kissed my grandfathers ex. I still don’t understand what draws me to this place or why I’m here, all these people have some kind of talent or special power but I don’t I’m pretty sure. Neither did my grandfather, so there’s not much I can do to help the situation. Basically Miss Peregrine and the children are stuck on a time loop on the day September 3rd, 1940. On September 4th, the Germans bomb this island ruining their home and killing everyone. To prevent this from happening, Miss Peregrine loops the 3rd every single day. So the children can do whatever they want, go into the town and talk to people and the next day all the people on the island will kind of reset not knowing this day has been looped. Which explains my grandpa somehow sending Miss Peregrine letters only 15 years ago. I can’t imagine going back home, I get a sense of fitting in and safety here. I’m really considering staying here. I mean what is there to lose anyways? It’s very interesting here and i’m learning a lot, like how to go through time loops. To go to September 3rd, there’s this tunnel you go through to get into the time loop. So I can go back and forth. So when I came back to my time, there was news about a sheep killer. It’s weird, why would anyone want to kill sheeps? It seemed a little strange so I asked my dad about it. He didn’t know much about it but he did tell me about this new ornithologist which is what dad is too so feels discouraged by having competition. He actually talked to the guy and noticed he was wearing sunglasses at night. Which made me think of how when hollowgasts are in their human form, their eyes are white. Maybe the new ornithologist is a potential hollowgast trying to hide it’s white eyes?

This quote shows that a peculiar could look just like a normal person but actually have be way different. The boy with the skinny arms that Jacob talked about was actually extremely strong.

“He said he wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he sat out the war while his people were being hunted and killed. Said it was hid duty. I suppose duty meant more to him than I did. Anyhow, I waited. I waited and worried through that whole bloody war, thinking every letter that came was a death notice. Then, when the war was finally over, he said he couldn’t possibly come back. Said he’d go stark raving. Said he’d learned how to defend himself in the army and he damn well didn’t need a nanny like the Bird to look after him anymore. He was going to America to make a home for us, and then he’d send for me. So I waited more. I waited so long that if I’d actually gone to be with him I would’ve been forty years old. By then he’d taken up with some commoner. And that, as they say, was that” (229)

This quote shows what happened between Emma and Jacob’s grandfather. It explains why when Emma first saw Jacob she couldn’t believe it because that would’ve meant that when Jacob’s grandfather went to America, he went and had children with another woman.

This quote is when Jacob went to Miss Peregrines home and was looking for more information about his grandfather. It shows that he was brave and went down to the extremely creepy basement. Luckily he did this because after going down there he met Emma, his grandfathers ex lover.

“I told grandpa that a made-up story and a fairy tale were the same thing, and that fairy tales were for pants-wetting babies, and that I knew his photos and stories were fakes. I expected him to get mad or put up a fight, but instead he just said, “Okay”“ (45).

This quote shows when Jacob’s grandpa gave up on telling him about the peculiars and all his experiences. But part of Jacob still wanted his grandpa to try harder to convince him. This quote not only shows Jacob betraying his grandfather by not believing him anymore but also his grandpa betraying Jacob by not trying harder.

Who are the most important people in your life? Why are they so meaningful to you?

I think the most important person in my life is my grandfather Abraham. Although no one else in the family knows how much of a good man he is, I know. He’d used to tell me about him being an orphan, fighting in wars, and all these other stories. When I was really young I first believed all these stories, but after a few years I got made fun of from believing them and eventually stopped like my dad and my aunt. No one believed his stories, even after he died. But deep down I knew he was a good man and he had no reason to lie to all of us. After finding out more about him from Miss Peregrine and the peculiar children he used to know it proved that everything he told me was true and that was a really honorable man. All the things he’s been through inspires me to continue his job of ridding the hollowgasts. Me and him are also very similar, we both can see the hollowgasts so I feel a strong connection to him.

Discussion question #3

How do you define success? Do you believe you’ve achieved success? If so how do you know? If not, what has prevented you?

Success to me is when I finish what my grandfather was trying to do, which is getting rid of all the hollowgasts. I haven’t gotten all of them yet as there are still many all around the world. They’re very strong but every time we kill one we are a little bit closer. They have long tentacled tongues and are huge. With the time loop closed and Miss Peregrine injured, the only thing to do now is to find all of these hollowgasts and stop them from hurting anymore people. What’s been preventing all the peculiars from getting rid of these hollowgasts is that they all can’t seem them, but I can. If I knew all these years I could’ve helped sooner, but now I’m ready to be the eyes for everyone and find the remaining hallowgasts.
