closeups under the cut!
You know you’re whipped for TNG when you see an episode thumbnail and immediately think “damn, Data looks good in this one”
So I started watching tng
Remember when Picard kept asking Data follow up questions at dinner because he was trying to cock block Lwaxana and when they cut back Data has opened a PowerPoint presentation.
He was truly living the infodump dream in this episode.
Watching this episode right now
People who openly like Dr. Katherine Pulaski on fandom spaces are braver than any U.S. Marine truly
"But she was mean to Data 😔" YES!! yes she was she could be a straight up bastard! But she also raised questions about his nature and abilities that even Data couldn't answer - questions that should be asked! And she changed her viewpoint over time! She was a good doctor! She had stone cold humour! She was kind to Worf! She had prejudiced ideas but when she was wrong she addressed it! That's an interesting character and it's a shame we didn't get to see more of it!
For my money, the best scene showing Pulaski's growth is from Pen Pals. The scene where they're discussing the prime directive and how it's supposed to keep emotions from influencing judgment and this exchange happens:
Pulaski: "My emotions are involved. Data's friend is going to die. That means something."
Worf: "To Data"
Pulaski: "Does that invalidate the emotion?"
And the whole senior staff shuts up, the room is silence and stunned expressions. She's on Team Data 100% for no other reason than Data thinks this is the right thing to do.
This illustrates just how much growth Pulaski has gone through. She goes from "I don't trust the judgment of a machine" to "I implicitly trust Data's judgment in interpreting our highest law, which we all took an oath to uphold". As far as she knows, Data's primary motivation for wanting to intervene is personal attachment.
She wasn't sure Data was even capable of that kind of relationship when she arrived on the ship. Now she's ready to risk her career supporting Data. (If Starfleet Command doesn't agree with their reasoning for intervening to save Sarjenka and Drema IV, the crew could be reprimanded, demoted, or even court martialed)
I have been called ableist and transphobic? for liking her character arc. It took MANY messages to get across the idea that I enjoy that we saw her growth. It wasn’t dramatic. It was just sincere learning, and I think the world needs more examples of characters that become better and show that it is possible to have growth.
funnily enough everyone loves Bones on TOS even tho he was so nasty and racist to Spock. She was dismissive to Data but never aggressively cruel. Bones was. And he didn’t really have much growth in that area. The writers have said ad nausea that they based Polaski off Bones. I much preferred Beverly, she was my favourite character. Polaski was a bit much but I did appreciate her growth as well. More importantly, tho, I can’t help note the hypocrisy in Trek fans who LOVE Leonard McCoy and hate Polaski when they are literally the same character.
She also brought something very much needed to TNG: conflict in the main cast. There's no real characters in the main cast who really have some big friction with each other on the show (maybe Wesley and Picard?). Polaski meanwhile has a gruff personality and conflict built right in with Data. Good conflict in the cast is important. It's one of the things that makes the growth of the DS9 cast so wonderful. And I find it sad that she never got to appear again in any more TNG stuff (I mean at least Denise Crosby got to play relatives of Yar)
I think too that people get confused about the fact that you can like a character because the character is dynamic and interesting and has intriguing arcs or plots while still not liking them as a person. You don’t have to like Polaski to like what she brings to the show.
Also, there’s nothing wrong with just genuinely liking her as well for all of the above reasons. Also, some people just like terrible characters, whether they evolve into better people or not in canon. Some people just like the potential of characters as well.
Once again, people need to stop yucking others’ yums.
Though, quick side point to a couple prevs ago, there’s definitely a difference with Bones because yes, Bones says some racist/xenophobic stuff to Spock, but it’s in the understanding that it was to rile Spock up specifically. That’s how their friendship was. Look at his interactions with other Vulcans and it’s an obvious difference. Bones is just that sort of bestie that insults you all the time to show they love you. Might be a bit toxic but hey, it works for some people. Spock wouldn’t have entrusted his katra to him if there was genuine antagonism there. I mean, Sarek assumed Kirk had it because of their closeness. It’s important and, yeah, it wasn’t like Spock had a lot of options at the time, but he trusted and loved Bones in his own way as well. They are the triumvirate for a reason.
I’m an unapologetic Kate Pulaski fan. Sue me.
It’s that time of the year again :)
star trek heritage post (December 16th, 2016)
Automatic reblog. I love this every time.
My 12 year old sister has started watching TNG with me, and here’s what she has to say so far (she’s very judgmental):
She calls Picard “horseshoe man” because of his male pattern baldness, and refuses to respond if you call him by his name.
She HATES Worf for some reason. She says “his brain is so small, but his forehead is so big because it’s full of anger”
About Q: “something about his face is… off”
Me: “how old do you think Wesley is?” Her: “Idk, 8?”
Me: “do you like Riker better with or without the beard?” Her: “…neither”
Me, explaining the pips: “so Picard has the most pips because he’s the Captain, then Riker has three, and Geordi has two-“ Her: “how many does forehead guy (Worf) have?” Me: “one solid pip and one outline pip” Her: “sooo he’s basically nothing”
About Data: “he’s very shiny and his hair looks like a helmet, but I still like him”
Any time a new species pops up: “ewww why does it look like that?
About Picard’s hair: “why doesn’t he just shave the rest of it so it looks like being bald is a choice?”
When more Klingons show up “ew there’s more of him?”
About Riker: “why does he walk like his onesie is too short for him?”
About Troi: “her outfit is the only one that looks not bad”
About Guinan: “Her hat is stupid. What does she even do?”
I’ll update as we continue to watch.
BTW I updated my McChekov fic a few days ago and I have another update like 75% done.
this is canon gene roddenberry told me himself
Instead of making progress on literally anything else, I wrote an angsty McChekov fic
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Stupid fic idea that I will probably never write
Star Trek x Criminal Minds crossover where the Enterprise Crew end up back in time as they hunt down some alien supervillain who is somehow back on earth in the mid 2000s and happens to be the unsub that the BAU are tracking. The only purpose for this would be to watch Chekov and Reid interact as two mega-smart boy geniuses.
transgender operations on illegal aliens in prison
Who would’ve thought that posting about my writing more would get more people interested in my writing?
Wild.
I need every Leonard McCoy/DeForest Kelley fan to go watch Bonanza's "The Decision" post-haste: YouTube (48 min.)
It features Kelley as a country doctor falsely accused of murder, and it's such a great McCoy prototype. He serves absolute cunt behind bars, is a hall of fame wife guy, and has his shirt half unbuttoned the whole episode. Please.
For anyone who is interested, my McChekov fic now has 5 chapters posted (plus a fun bonus) and a new chapter is coming out tomorrow! It’s called “Hold Me Close in Your Supernova Heart” on ao3. I posted the link a little while ago.
