@been-thinking-a-lot-today
finally made some progress on chapter 3 of the timetravel fic preview below :)
“Bird?” he calls as he opens the door to their home, hoping for once that Jay won’t respond.
Nothing looks different.
Jay’s standing in front of their bunk beds, fussing with his right hand like it's a hurting paw.
“Wh-what’s in the box, eh, Birdie?” Matt asks.
“What box?” Jay responds, distracted.
Closer, now, to his impending doom, Matt can see there’s a band. A band for a bird. His Jay has a pretty little ring, simple and gold resting on his finger like it’s always been there.
A quick movement of his thumb and he feels one on his own hand, invisible through a habituation he wasn’t here for.
“It’s a metaphor, a reference, uh,” Matt can’t think. “Haven’t you seen —? Uh, it’s just, it’s like Schrodinger’s cat. I’m just. Checking whether you’re dead or alive, haha.” It spills fake from his mouth, each syllable distinct. Ha ha.
“Matt,” Jay says, still not even bothering to look at him. “Did you do something? In 2008? Why do I have this? Where — if I got… If I married someone, where is she?”
Like he's been torn out of his own body and left to do nothing but observe the living masses, Matt notes how Jay doesn’t even sound upset at the prospect. Normally, butterfly effect-ing their lives would be something Jay would be throwing a fit over. Jay is looking down at the ring like it’s an opened door.
This is why Matt had to come inside. He had to see this. He had to be reminded. He needed to know. It’s fine.
He has all the time in the world to figure out how to do this right. Remembering probably isn’t a good option, actually. He can take the RV now and go move the Orbitz and then when medial Matt and Jay return to the future he’ll be left behind, and either fade away or he can just take care of it himself. It’s fine.
“Matt?” Jay says, turning.
“Jay, Jaybird,” Matt echoes.
Jay frowns at him. “What happened to your pants? I get a wife and you get… less pants?”
Something hysterical bubbles up through him, almost escaping out his mouth. “Yeah, Bird, I guess so.”
He should just run out right now. It wouldn’t make a difference. He’ll have to leave his Jay here for another Jay to replace, but it’d be a kindness. He wouldn’t have to know then. He could live in bliss until the end. It’s for the best.
Matt takes a step back. “I’m uh, uh, I’m just going to bring the RV ‘round the back, then?”
“Actually,” Jay says, and Matt doesn’t know how to feel. “Actually… actually I guess that’s fine. I was going to… No, yeah. Sure.”
He’s looking at the ring again. Shiny things, his Bird loves shiny things.
“Bye, then,” Matt says. He doesn’t know why. Maybe because he’s about to kill them both. In a metaphysical way, it’s totally chill.
Some thoughts on the underlying themes in The Dirties, tracking from types of school shootings to the nature of yourself as influenced by those around you, partially in conversation with @pink-carnelian's post here (wonderful commentary on Dirties!Matt's position as a consumer rather than original generator of the shooter archetype, and how one of the movie's biggest points is about how thin the line is between victim and aggressor, how stigmatization is used to pare down the uncomfortably broad human capacity for cruelty, all of which I'm also going to be talking about now lol)
For obvious reasons, I'm going to be very bluntly discussing school shootings. YMMV.
once you start referring to a sports team as we/our/us……… that’s when you know it’s over for you

MAJOR NTBTSTM SPOILERS
some really cool bts posted on instagram today (1, 2)
it's so important to me how jay is actually the awkward and embarrassing one lol that's why it pisses me off sooo bad when jay tries to humiliate matt in front of ppl or make matt feel the the one who's socially undesirable. like matt doesn't even try to look or act like a normal guy so it's fine if people see him as an outsider or judge him using a different set of metrics or whatever. but jay...what's your excuse? you show up to parties looking like THAT and you can't even introduce yourself? you just walk in and everyone immediately gets weirdo vibes and stays the hell away from you? even though you're like obviously the most handsome one in the room? that's another level of antisocial behavior buddy. you're better off back home in your kennel

being homosexual but yk, a woman not a man makes being in slash spaces so interesting sometimes lol. a lot of people with good hearts can end up talking about homosexual angst in a way where they kiiiind of think it's the realm of men. or lesbianism just kind of doesn't occur to them, as existing or as having equal depth
on a separate note, people kind of know at this point that making bottom and top into personalities is reductive and offensive, but like you wanna tell them to unclench their deathgrip on making everything butch/fem and they look at you like you're crazy
I'm the guy who does that stuff :)

-final chapter of the time travel fic. The Consequnces TM (i have all my notes but i've made zero progress...)
-jay tries to clean on his own for once hurt/comfort (he will be gassed, written with loving accuracy)
-a take on The Book (combining it with a popular trope from another fandom for referential fun) (the trope is hockey rpf tentacle dick) (what if matt is so verklempt because his dick is a lecherous tentacle) (this isnt a good idea but im probably gonna write it anyway) (do not assume this will be sexy)
any preference for which i try to work on this weekend (i am trying to get resolve to do it)
