The evening is enjoyable enough even indoors, which is why you’re all sprawled in the living room, introducing your sister’s friends ( mostly James and Sirius anyway ) to the real magic of the muggle world: the tv.
You’ve rented Rocky, which is one of your favorite movies at the moment. You may have watched it at least three times; this should be the fourth, you’ve already lost count.
Everyone is focused on the screen until the doorbell rings. When Lily doesn’t move, with a roll of your eyes and a huff, you get up. No one exactly notices it, besides James, who gives you a sheepish look.
Surprisingly, when you open the door, the last bloke you expect is in front of you: Severus.
Your eyes widen, but you force a tight smile anyway. “Sev, hi.” Unlike your sister Lily, you were never that close with him growing up; he always stayed reserved and closed off, and besides that, he always gave you the creeps.
“Hi,” he replies, forcing a smile too. “Mum needs flour if you have it.”
You nod, stepping away from the door. “Sure, would you like to come in?”
His head inclines curiously. “Is Lily at home?”
He shakes his head. “I’ll wait here if you don’t mind.”
You give him a skeptical look. It is for sure as it looks— he is avoiding her, which doesn’t make sense to you, since you’ve always seen him and your sister like two peas in a pod, even if you still can’t understand how.
But then, without asking any questions, you nod again, leaving the door ajar as you go to the kitchen, which is, in fact, not empty as you expected. James is there, sipping a glass of water.
“Hey,” he says as you walk into the room.
You give him a weird look, “hi?” Mostly because you don’t know why he is greeting you since you saw him three minutes ago, but also because you don’t know how to act around him without making a fool of yourself. Still, during these days you have managed pretty well.
“Who was at the door anyway?” he asks, a glimpse of curiosity passing through his eyes.
You let out a chuckle at that, shrugging. “Just my neighbor asking for flour.”
He steps next to you, picking up the flour you were desperately trying to reach for a while, and gives it to you with a smirk. You can’t help but feel the heat in your cheeks.
His smirk shifts into a gentle smile, which makes your knees weak. You can’t live another few weeks like this without jumping his bones— you are sure of it.
“I’ll walk you to the door,” he says. You are already hearing his steps behind you as you say, “It’s not necessary, James,” but he doesn’t reply; he just lets you be, walking with you either way, still thinking how good his name sounds when it leaves your lips.
However, when you open the door, his whole face changes completely. His features harden, and so do his eyes.
You obviously can’t see that, but you do see how Severus’ posture shifts completely, and mostly, you feel James’ hand on your lower back, placing himself right next to you.
“Potter,” spits Severus, like he has just tasted venom.
“Snivellus,” replies James. You can almost feel that damn smirk on his face as he says it.
You have to cough to hide the chuckle you let out, then your attention goes back to your neighbor.
“Here you go, no need to return it.”
“Thanks.” This time he doesn’t even force a smile at you, completely petrified.
“Bye, Sev,” you force yourself to smile again, before closing the door. When you do, you let your back rest against it, crossing your arms and arching a brow as you look at James.
“What the hell was that about?”
He answers with a shrug. “Don’t know what you’re talking about, Evans.”
You roll your eyes and walk past him. The idea of him and the rest of his friends going to school with Severus is vague in your mind, and in all honesty you don’t care much that he was acting like a jerk toward him, but you do care about the why.
You really hate when people fake being clueless to hide the truth.
“Who was it?” asks Lily, mouth full of popcorn.
You let out a sigh, taking your place again. “It was just Snape.”
Marlene scoffs, while Peter and Sirius snicker. Remus just rolls his eyes and lets out a disgusted “yuck.”
Lily pales visibly a little. “Oh.”
You swear you can see her lips tremble, so of course now you’re worried, shifting to face your sister.
“What happened?” you ask, carefully placing your hand on hers. Your sister, who may be the most perfect person in your eyes, has the worst habit known to man when she is nervous.
Lily looks away, still chewing on her bottom lip. “We just aren’t friends anymore.”
You tilt your head slightly, “why not?” you ask with genuine worry, because you know how much your sister cares for him, but to you? He has always been an asshole.
You frown, starting to lose your patience, not at Lily, never at Lily— but at the fact that Severus hurt the feelings of someone so kind like your sister.
“Mudblood. It’s a denigrating word in the wizarding world.”
You exhale, pressing the tips of your fingers against your temple. “I’m gonna kill him,” you state silently, then nod to yourself and push yourself up from the couch.
“I’m gonna kill him,” you say louder this time, but then Lily’s hand stops you and you sit back down again.
You pull your sister closer to you, brushing her hair lightly with your hand. The others watch quietly, hearts melting at the interaction.
Sirius wonders if Regulus would do the same.
You mumble different insults toward Snape. “Fucking git, I always knew he was no good.”
Lily lets out a long sigh and feels almost on the verge of tears because of how much it bothers you.
“Don’t worry babe,” Marlene reassures you, “I hexed him right after.”
You lift your hand and she immediately high fives you back.
“I’ll show him, muggle style or whatever we’re called by you lot.”
Remus snorts out a laugh.
“Shouldn’t have lent him the flour,” you murmur once again.
You see Lily’s shoulders shake, a sign that she’s laughing, and somehow you are relieved.
