I know I’ve talked about the bait and switch of Fruits Basket before, but I think the reason it haunts me is that it isn’t an intentional bait and switch, you know?

Like something like School Live! or Madoka Magica or even Zombie Land Saga, like, they know what they’re doing. “Oh you thought this was a cute school club anime, but actually it’s a horror anime. Oh, you thought this was a cute mahou shoujo, but actually it’s a Faustian nightmare. Oh you thought this was a horror anime, but actually it’s a cute idol anime.” Like, they did that on purpose. Clearly and intentionally, and you can tell they knew what they were doing.

But Fruits Basket seems entirely unaware that people might’ve come to this premise expecting a sex comedy. Like, “a curse turns me into an animal whenever I hug the opposite sex” is classic old school sex comedy. You hear that premise and you’re like, of course! I have seen Ranma 1/2. I have seen the comedic transformation exploits of many a silly comedy! I know where this is going to go. It’ll be silly, light, maybe a little raunchy but in that chaste shoujo way. Expecting some Ouran tones mixed with some Ranma, like I get it. I can picture the series easily.

And then Fruits Basket is like “Glad you could show up to the abused children trauma hour! This is a show about toxic relationships and dark depressing themes where literally no one can achieve happiness because of powers outside their control. :)” with like, zero awareness, none awareness, that that might not have been what people were expecting from the “turn into animals when hugged by members of the other sex” show. It’s amazing. I admire it? Like I strive to be that committed to my ideas that I bring absolutely no one’s preconceptions of them to my execution. Amazing. Sorry if you wanted a sex comedy from this sex comedy premise, because we’re going full angst in the club tonight.
