05.11 - He's a long way from home

i'm alive *shaky thumbs up*

i've slept 5 hrs in the last 48

the puppies are here! we ended up making it to the c-section anyways. which is fine by me, several were apparently trying to breach and that could have gotten dangerous fast.

but then first time mama recovering from c-section... did not want these 6 squirmy lil screamy things that wanted to chase her around and nurse on her sore tummy

so it's been a very long 48 hrs of holding her in my lap and making sure every puppy is latched and nursing, cooking for her (she will NOT eat kibble), stimulating baby puppies to potty. weights, temperatures, all while also caring for the rest of the dogs

tell and i are exhausted

then today she finally seemed to realize these are her babies and began actually mothering them

but. we still have the issue of the littlest baby boy. he is vigorous, has a huge appetite, is active and happy. he just will not gain weight. no matter how much we get him to nurse.

so tomorrow i get to face another long time fear i have been fortunate enough to never need but will save lives if i can master it: tube feeding

i'm just. 13 years of raising litters for others and with my mentors and i am sitting here overwhelmed with thankfulness for every mentor and every breeder who has taught me and shared their tips and experiences and let me try things. it's saving lives now. i'm raising this litter. tell is overwhelmed. she is helping as much as she can but she panics, which panics the mama dog. so it's me. i'm not gonna let her have another massive trauma. i will let the nerves and the pressure hit me later. for now, i have babies to raise. this is my first time truly flying solo. and this is something i feel like i was built to do
