So. I acquired a corset from my tech theatre costume closet that nobody ever uses. After research, I discovered it is, in fact, a girdle. Not just any, but manufactured for medical use.

Here are photos of how it looks on me.

now. when i first saw this garment, i thought it was a corset. so i put it on backwards and upside down from how it was originally worn. Turns out, this way of wearing it has two major wins for me. One. It stays up, even without straps. two. it flattens my bust.

looking at the photos, there is one obvious way to wear it that is correct. however. i may take some of this information and transfer it to making a proper bust binder for winter. the pattern, for example. I like that it has those hooks and eyes on the side. When worn as a girdle, i like the elastic over the hip bones which allow it to sit lower on my body. when worn as a bust binder, the laces are over my hip bones, which are fine, but not specifically comfy for long term wear. What I REALLY like is the relative lack of shelf boob you get with 17th c stays. This effect is there, but if i replicated it, could be removed with cording in the top section.

i am super excited for all of the discoveries and research and learning-by-doing that will ensue.
