Empowered women empower women

Whenever I attend a birth, I always tend to feel empowered. How could I not? Each woman is strong and powerful, and this strength lingers through every contraction, through every push, through every time a new mother gets to hold her dear, new baby in her arms. I remember last summer, when I got called to attend my very first birth as a midwife. It was her first baby and she rocked birthing like she had done it multiple times before! With my first visit, she was already at 5 centimeters and when I came back 2 hours later she was almost fully dilated. Although she planned on having a hospital birth, she decided she would give birth at home. Her husband and I set up the pool and everything was ready for the baby to come.

After a little over an hour of pushing, she gave birth to a little baby girl. I had only seen her once before during her pregnancy, but birth is an excellent time to bond and in a few minutes you get closer to each other than an outsider could probably ever imagine. So imagine this: here I am, 21 years old and freshly out of university, just attended my first birth and it was a beautiful home birth on a nice and very, very hot summer day. The adrenaline rushed through my veins and I was so excited I could jump up and down and yell to everyone who might want to hear that I. Just. Helped. Deliver. A. Baby. By myself!

The maternity nurse brought a student with her, and while I was stitching the new mother up, the student assisted me by giving me my supplies and lighting the areas I could not see very well. I could not hide my enthusiasm and told the new mum how proud I was of her. I also told her that she was the first woman I helped deliver a baby since becoming a midwife, and the student maternity nurse told her that this was the last birth she had to attend before she could work on her own as well! We were hyped. Then the mother said: “And I just deliver my first baby! We must be super women!”

I felt so emotional and empowered and energized and I could just cry and hug all the amazing women there with me in that moment (although that wouldn’t be a good idea, being that I was still in the middle of stitching her up and I had to work sterile and all). This experience brought me such joy and when I came home I honestly felt humbled by the whole thing. I feel privileged to be a part of all these wonderful women’s life. We most certainly are super women, all of us.
