Long time wanted to draw Godzilla print and finally got vision for it! Inspired mainly by shin godzilla’s terrifying design but took some more classic elements to it as well
sharing some of the process behind the inside covers of The Chase doujinshi

When making a design such as a cover with text on it, I always include the text right at the start. This way it doesn't have to be squeezed in or disappear under the lineart or colors, and will be legible.
In the basic sketch/lineart, I paid most attention to the characters and their placement in relation to the background. The composition was about reflections, as they will be looking towards the inner pages of the physical book – meaning the story. So they are not only looking at each other, but also at the possibilities that the story can bring them.
I made the cityscape from a 3d asset. Ain't nobody got time for drawing all that!!
I filled in the characters with white to make sure the silhouettes worked well. The flat blue bg is the lightest tone in which the text is still legible. Then I sent the whole thing to K.
The colors were intended to create a sense of depth and a feeling that even though their backs are toward the sunset, the night ahead of them will make them discover something new and good. That's why the darkness wasn't intended as looming or foreboding, but instead it makes them glow around the edges.
I told this to K, who picked the colors for the next phase and filled them in. The sky was colored with soft sunset tones that differ from the flat purple dusk of the outer cover to mixed hues of blue, pink and orange. The night hasn't fallen yet: the prospects are endless.
Our coloring styles differ a bit – K's is more stylistic, mine is closer to realism. I wonder if it's because I worked as a light operator? Anyhow, despite her edits, I felt like I wanted to add something to it, and with her permission, I did.
I added some depth to the illustration by making the city scene lighter and the characters on the foreground darker. I also edited the highlights brighter and more saturated, so they would "pop" out more. It's always a risk to darken a print illustration a lot, but this time it really made a difference. It looks amazing in print, too! The covers were thick matte paper, which really made the dark stand out.
I didn't make any changes to the sky, but somehow it seems brighter now that the foreground is darker. Don't you think?
