How to Care for an Introvert
How to Care for an Introvert
1. Respect their need for privacy and to spend time alone.
2. Be careful never to embarrass them in public.
3. When they are in a new situation, allow them to stand back, and watch what’s going on.
4. Allow them time to process what you’re asking or saying. Don’t demand an answer right away.
5. Be patient if they hesitate to find the right words – and never interrupt while they are speaking.
6. If you are going to change or cancel plans, give them plenty of prior notice.
7. Allow them to practice and perfect skills alone.
8. Correct or challenge them privately – never in front of an audience.
9. Don’t force them to hang out with a crowd of people, or expect them to amass a lot of friends. A few good friends is more comfortable for them.
10. Don’t try to turn them into an extrovert. Respect them for being exactly who they are.
I saw a sad facebook post from the gay bookstore back in Ann Arbor where I used to live about how they hadn’t sold any books that day so I went on their online store and bought a couple, and while you don’t get #deals like elsewhere online, I’d love it if y’all would consider buying your next gay book from them instead of like, Amazon.

#[40S COMMERCIAL ANNOUNCER VOICE] WHAT’S BETTER THAN THIS? GALS BEING PALS
Fun fact: Though being gay in the 40s sucked, being gay in the military was easier, and pretty common. There were apparently, at one point in time time so many lesbians in the military that when they tried to crack down on it, the girls wrote back and said “Look I can give you the names, but you’ll lose some of your best officers, and half your nurses and secretaries.” And they pretty much shut up about it unless you were especially bad at subtlety. (Source: Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers. A good source for gay history from 1900s onwards.)
Sergeant Phelps worked for General Eisenhower. Four decades after Eisenhower had defeated the Axis powers, Phelps recalled an extraordinary event. One day the general told her, “I’m giving you an order to ferret those lesbians out.’ We’re going to get rid of them.”
“I looked at him and then I looked at his secretary. who was standing next to me, and I said, ‘Well, sir, if the general pleases, sir, I’ll be happy to do this investigation for you. But you have to know that the first name on the list will be mine.’
“And he kind of was taken aback a bit. And then this woman standing next to me said, ‘Sir, if the general pleases, you must be aware that Sergeant Phelps’s name may be second, but mine will be first.’
“Then I looked at him, and I said, ‘Sir, you’re right. They’re lesbians in the WAC battalion. And if the general is prepared to replace all the file clerks, all the section commanders, all of the drivers—every woman in the WAC detachment—and there were about nine hundred and eighty something of us—then I’ll be happy to make the list. But I think the general should be aware that among those women are the most highly decorated women in the war. There have been no cases of illegal pregnancies. There have been no cases of AWOL. There have been no cases of misconduct. And as a matter of fact, every six months since we’ve been here, sir, the general has awarded us a commendation for meritorious service.’
“And he said, ‘Forget the order.’
- The Gay Metropolis: The Landmark History of Gay Life in America
I’ve reblogged this before but it didn’t have these comments and HOLY HOT DAMN DID IT NEED THEM.
So, when someone sits down to write a fiction about Women commandos, and a Dudebro steps in to say “Huh, that is so unrealistic huh.”
Harold… oh, Harold…sit down, shut up, and stay out of our way.
History is infinitely gayer than a lot of people want to admit <3

How you say it is just as important as what you say.
strumming methodically to the everyday and rolling down a window in an attempt to let creativity in. it’s not easy these days when everything is so calculated and security is so vital.
I’ve spent so long doing this same goddamned thing that I’m stuck in this rut. And the few times that I actually break free leave me wondering why I don’t do it more.
I see the sun rise every morning now, and I can’t appreciate it.
Control…
It’s a thing that takes hold and refuses to let up, regardless of my pleas.
roll down the window, it’s too loud. roll up the window, it’s too stifled.
what will it take to please this ridiculously insatiable soul? it’s frustrating and aimless.
roll down this goddamned window already…

Lead on, slow and sweet. The road may be unknown, But the journey is certain. Lead on, slow and sweet. We’ll make it there together.

We are capable of so much more, So why do we spend so much time Harboring such hatred and spite? The sun has provided the light; It is up to us to use it to dispel The darkness of fear. For it is only by illuminating The lurking unknown That we can begin to see all of our sameness.

We are here, ducking in the shadows, Awaiting what lies beyond The passing of the torch. Assure us, please, That the fire above us Is merely a beacon That is not awaiting our reemerging For the commencement of our demise. -kh 11.20.16
