Guys, I’m writing some articles for my friend’s website again and I need some examples of how fandom is racist towards characters of color and fans of color. I’ve already talked about how white fans will remove black characters from pictures and replace with white ones. I need a few more to talk about.

The empathy gap. Textbook example is the way Finn is treated vs how Kylo Ren is treated by fandom. Finn was taken as a baby and raised by the FO to kill and die for them. He chose to defy the FO and escape what was truly bondage. Whenever he showed fear or evidence of trauma, he was called a coward, weak and worthless. Kylo, on the other hand, who embraced the Dark Side and fought against the light still in him, who killed, ordered a slaughter of unarmed/disarmed vilagers, and committed violence toward Rey, Finn and Poe, is “mentally ill,” a victim of abuse and brainwashed from conception. Nothing bad that Kylo does is his fault; nothing Finn does that is good really matters. Finn is not framed as a survivor, or courageous. He cares for Rey, and showing it is seen as pathetic and unrequited. Trying to help her makes him a misogynist. Meanwhile, Kylo, personification of toxic masculinity, is a sweet baby who deserves love.

This is a reflection of real world (often subconscious) perceptions that lead to justifications when an innocent Black person is killed – and for justifications when a white person kills innocent people. The empathy gap not trivial.
