Awkward Duck [ + Doona ]

“I’ll talk to you later, I gotta attend a briefing session for an upcoming mission.” the raven head said through her phone. Muttering the word goodbye, Sun ended her phone call as she took the elevator up. A twist of the doorknob and the lean woman entered the room, slightly surprised to see only one agent in the room – a rather young one in fact.

It was better to be early anyways, Sun thought to herself as she walked over, and again, slightly surprised that the younger male had offered her a seat. She gave the man a quick smile as she sat down with her legs crossed. “It’s nice to see you as well,” the older woman greeted back.

Russet eyes took a good look at the younger male. He looked nervous – maybe it was because of the mission they were about to receive, but anyway, Sun wasn’t familiar with her fellow agent despite the fact that she had seen him a couple of times with or without Mina close by.

It wasn’t too late for introduction anyways. Hence, “I don’t think I’ve caught your name. I’m Sun, and you are?”

Of course. He had forgotten to introduce himself. Sometimes it was amazing the fact he was a raven. Then again, things where different between an actual mission and just casual interaction at the HQ. This was Jaebum though-- Probably better if he focused on the task at hand at the moment.

“I’m Agent 32946 or you can just call me Jaebum.” The young man bowed at the other agent. Maybe he still had a chance in saving what was left of his persona.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you.” Jaebum offered her a smile. Hopefully it didn’t look too strained. He really didn’t mean it if so. It’s just difficult playing it cool when you’re in front of someone so high up in the food chain- Or at least he thought she was anyway. Call it respect or maybe even admiration if you will.

Maybe it was best he kept quiet again for now considering he didn’t want to put his foot in his mouth. So to speak of course. He cleared his throat carefully an fixed the collar of his shirt as he looked around the room for what felt like the millionth time. Of course he’d been there before but it always felt new to him when he was in there with a different agent. Did that make sense to anyone else?

as if it were possible, jinyoung imagines what it would be like to sink into the carpeted floor, dissolve into molecules so tiny that cute guy wouldn’t believe he ever existed in the first place, perhaps shrug this whole awkward and unfortunate ordeal off to some sleep-deprived lapse of judgement. 

or, if jinyoung’s lucky, cute guy is actually cute drug addict guy, and he can just blame it on a bad acid trip. 

but jinyoung’s active imagination is just that, an imaginary daydream void of possibility of ever actually happen, and even he knows he isn’t capable of conjuring up a voice as saccharine and smooth as that. finally raising his head to look at the concerned stranger, jinyoung offers a small, sheepish smile in return for the concern. 

he can’t shake the feeling of being ten years younger, not when the stranger—im jaebum—is squatting down and humouring him like this. he feels like a child who just lost their comfort blanket, condemned to countless sleepless nights until he gets it back. but is he alright? well. that’s probably still up for debate. 

“park jinyoung,” he finally answers after a moment to reconsider his position, locked out and moody from a sorrowful anniversary and a bad day at work. “and i somehow managed to leave my only key inside with the door locked. so, uh, i guess i’ve been better.” he admits through a thin layer of nonchalance and a slight quirk of his mouth upwards. 

jinyoung never really responded well to being pitied—or attractive strangers either, for that matter—so he isn’t quite sure how to approach this situation. 

“i don’t suppose you’re good at breaking into people’s homes?“

okay maybe the situation amused him more than it should. in his eyes the other male reminded him more of a scolded kid than anything else. close seconds was a lost puppy--

“nice to meet you, jinyoung.” he nodded slightly before remaining quiet to listen to the other’s tale of sorrow. apparently he wasn’t the only one who had a long day. “it happens to the best of us, man.” to some more than other’s but his point remained. so there they were two (basically) strangers in the hallway looking like they needed 10 naps and a responsible adult.

before he could even conjure up what to say next the other’s question amused him far too much for his own good. “breaking into people's homes? ah, i left the life of crime behind me years ago.” jaebum said in a playful tone before offering his hand again. “how about we just find you an open locksmith and see what we can do about your door? don’t you have a roommate you can call?”

“if we can’t do either i can always offer you the comfort of a warm couch and some snacks. if you aren’t allergic to cats that is.” he always forgot some people were allergic to cats. probably one of the main reasons he subconsciously denied most people entry to his apartment. that and the mess-

oh no. did he clean up before leaving that day? cute neighbors need not know how much of a mess he was.

oh well. maybe luck was on his side.

she doesn’t know how she finds herself surrounded by six empty bottles of soju, her table sticky with spilt beer and liqueur as she stares down at her plate of meat, now cold.  

the whole department decided it was time for a break, her seniors organizing a dinner at their go-to place: that one restaurant that sold meat and beer at a discount for Seoul University students, and the business majors had special treatment thanks to them frequenting the place. drinking games took place as they grilled the meat, cheering and laughing. ah young could only smile along, relieved to cool off from studying for a bit. 

the place gets even rowdier when a group of students- not from their department- comes in. ah young, her head spinning, squints at them as she tries to put a name to at least one of the faces before someone demands for her attention by placing his hand on her shoulder. she accepts his drink, her lips curling slightly at the corners as she tilts her head back, finishing it in one go. ah young then realizes if she keeps on drinking at this rate, she’s definitely going to black out. the last thing she wants is to embarrass herself in front of the whole faculty. she pushes herself away from the table, excusing herself to step out into the cold, trying to sober up. she declines the glass pushed towards her with a half hearted apology, and doesn’t notice a boy two years her senior follows her out.

ah young leans against the wall, pushing her hair out of her face as she breathes in the cold air. there’s one missed call from her father- he’s probably wondering where his daughter is just in case he needs to pick her up. she swipes a thumb across the screen, about to message her father when she’s interrupted by her senior. she blinks up at him, bowing her head in greeting before looking back down at her phone. but she’s forced to look back up at him again when he strikes up a conversation, and she smiles tightly at him. 

he’s getting closer. despite the spinning in her head she notices the sudden change in the distance between them. he has a lit cigarette between his fingers, and she holds her breath, not wanting to breathe any of it in. she wonders how long she’ll have to go on like this before collapsing from suffocating herself.

jaebum didn’t know what what compelled him to go out with his classmates in the first place. after all his bed called for him-- it was a match made in heaven something his brother used to poke fun at him ever so often. for now however, he was stuck at the restaurant with some of the other people from the sociology department-- hopefully it wouldn’t turn into another karl marxxian debate.

although on any other day he would have probably been down for a few drinks he had to drive back home-- which was dangerous enough on itself all things considered.

it wasn’t until he was thinking of how to excuse himself in an attempt to escape that his phone decided to ring. thank you mom and your need to discuss new things for the shop at weird times. now maybe he cold finally escape back home and probably bother his neighbours for a while.

once outside of the restaurant he spotted a peculiar scene who would genuinely make anyone uncomfortable. well, anyone who could read the situation anyway. he took a deep breath and headed over quickly recognizing the male. with a sigh he approached the problematic male and placing a hand on his shoulder.

“should i tell the coach you’re smoking again?” jaebum carefully peeled the male away from girl giving her a pointed look, almost as if asking if she was okay. the assailant was a known troublemaker from the snu swim team. ugh he just wanted to head back home and relax. “i didn’t see you today we had practice you know?” with that he dragged the male away hoping to give the female a breath of fresh air.

She frowns and without a thought, reaches up and flicks his forehead.  “You little shit,” but it’s said with such affection it could almost be misconstrued.  Jaebum was certainly accustomed to it by now and saw through her tricks easily. Although the same could be said for her. Her nose scrunches up and she hip checks him lightly.  “That part of this conversation is completely immaterial so you can shush thank you very much.”  Because it was true, she was just as weak for food.  Especially junk food, it’s such a problem most of the time.

Mina wears a similar deadpanned expression as she looks up at him.  “If we did that it wouldn’t be edible at all.”  Probably still more edible than if they made it as salty as her soul, but that’s a digression she won’t get in to.  “Do me a favor and grab them will you while I get a pan?”  She doesn’t really wait for a response though, shuffling to the other side of the small kitchen and starts to dig around for a decent sized pan. “Who needs real clothes?  We’ll just go through the drive through, they can’t judge us that way. And even if they do I’ll give them the stink eye until they stop.”  As soon as she finds a pan, she jumps up with a little ‘ah-hah!’ and turns, smiling and quite pleased with herself.

He doesn’t move or flinch or anything really-- He just stares at her rather blankly. “I’m going to throw you out a window really soon.” Okay, maybe not. Jaebum knew he’d get his ass kicked straight to the moon as soon as he made any attempt to get revenge. “Immaterial? Really?” A raised brow indicated he was ready to refute but none the less he new when to keep quiet.

“True...” A light hum escaped him as he thought. Jaebum being the obedient little minion he is goes to do as told before giving out a sigh of relief. “God bless the drive through man. We can take my car since it’s already parked outside and such. Mina stink eye is also the best defense mechanism.” He pplaced the things on the counter before rubbing his chin. “I think that one dude from McDonalds still traumatized y’know.”

Late Nights [ + Jonghyun ]

“Work?” Jonghyun asked with obvious skepticism, but he wouldn’t pry, thus, he didn’t press. He simply angled his head, eyebrows high on his forehead before he shook the curiosity out of him, and glanced above the other’s shoulder (pondering over the story he was about to elaborate on, and that he easily felt he’d shape effortlessly out of thin air).

He couldn’t see a hundred percent, at first, how’d this affect the other; he was aiming for a teasing edge initially, words out of his mouth before most of it had been evaluated properly, and he knew that despite his prided cautiousness. Jonghyun could be quite impulsive, and even more when he lacked things to occupy himself with. He seized the opportunity, and he decided right then if he’d do it — and at this point, as he listened the younger male inquire and prod over the fictitious statement, he’d be successful regardless —, he shouldn’t half ass it.

And so, his performance begun (not that it’d require much, however, his body language seemed receptive already), and jonghyun feigned surprise by the fact he wasn’t informed. “You haven’t heard?” He frowned, and made a show of scanning the place with his eyes before he met his again. “Well, it’s a sore subject.” He paled at the latter, swallowing. “Man, i wouldn’t joke about that. But I can tell you though, if you’re curious…”

Jaebum nodded slightly as he eyed the other male. “Work.” He echoed rather quietly as he remained rather focused on the other male. Almost, almost attempting to see what was going on inside the other’s head. Not that he had the slightest fucking idea what it could be.

He raised both brows as he looked at the other male still quite unsure of what to thin of the situation. However he crossed his arms over his chest taking a moment to adjust himself comfortably in his spot. At the other’s words he instinctively squinted. "What are you going on about? I swear to God if I find out you’re lying...” He’d do absolutely nothing of course. But empty threats made him feel better.

The young man took in a deep breath before signalling the other to an empty seat next to him. Truth be told he’d be lying if he said he wasn’t anxious in the slightest. “Tell me already before I change my mind.” Jaebum stretched slightly in his spot before running his fingers through his hair as he waited. The story would either wake him up or just finish lulling him into sleep. Let’s see how it goes.

“Because I said so.” The age old response that she would use probably even when they were eighty-something and sitting in rocking chairs complaining about kids on their lawns.  Also because she rather enjoyed those stories, even if they were mostly used as blackmail material when the need arose—which wasn’t often.  “Weak for food, yes.” She reiterates with a chuckle and a tiny amused smile.  When he squints at her, she squints in return, her nose wrinkling up a little as well.

His first suggestion was honestly a surprise.  Neither of them were exactly a fan of eggs.  But at least it surprised him as well.  Although she would eat the whites as well, one of the things they had in common.  “Salt sure, but I think the ham is already salted? Hm.”  This actually was a bit of a conundrum and she didn’t like it one bit. “Dude wait, what about fries?  I got some potatoes we can make them here and then make a milkshake run because now I’m thinking about milkshakes and I need that in my life.”

“Because I said so.” Jaebum repeated in mock tone before squinting slightly at the other. Of course he was weak for food. His mother always told him that the quickest way into a persons heart was through well, their stomach. That being said no matter how good the food might be he stood firm in his ‘you shan't trick me into marriage’ corner. “You say that like it’s something absolutely horrible. You also say that like it weren’t through for you either.” He raised his brows as he watched her.

“Make it as salty as my soul.” He said deadpan expression as he simply stared at the ingredients. “Salted fries tho. I’m so down for this.” He inhales deeply before stretching out rather ungracefully in victory-- Sort off. “Do we have to put on real clothes? That wasn’t in my schedule for the day.” True, it wasn’t. Milkshakes however are a life or death matter. “Can we order smoothies from the drive through window?”

Im Jaebum: He’s got a very short fuse.

It’s something he’s learned to control or at the very least hide as he grows older. If we’re gonna point fingers here it should be said he takes after his mom. Partially why he tends to have war flashbacks about High School whenever it’s mentioned. Let it be known he’s never once raised his voice at his younger siblings no matter how mad or upset he might be.

I’m a Sociology student this is a load of boogus nonsense.” Jaebum admittedly should have been paying more attention to their professor but it’s really, really hard to concentrate when they look like a woompa loompa. Grimacing he looked over the procedure he had done before sliding his paper over to the girl. “Just decapitate me and get it over with. It will be easier for both of us.”

“They do. They really do.” A soft chuckle escaped the young man before nodding slightly. “My mom always told me to be respect full of everyone, even if they don’t do the same. Which was honestly a big issue for me growing up because I speak too much but you might have noticed that ready.” Jaebum offered the female an apologetic smile before dipping his head slightly. “I shouldn’t take too much of your time, you seem busy.”

Typically ravens would be considered the smooth and rather charming type. After all, it was a job requirement. But atypically it would happen that when off duty they where anything but.

Well, sadly that was the case of our buddy Im Jaebum. Amazing in the field but not so amazing when you ran into him in the office. In his defense as much as he enjoyed toying with people his work, in the end he was just another awkward college student. Think of it like Superman and Clark Kent; glasses included and all that jazz. Except lets face it glasses can’t really hide your identity--- Anyway.

It wasn’t that he was particularly nervous about this debriefing session. Well, he wasn’t. Not until he saw who he was partnered with. Why was this his life? He probably looked like a mess. No he didn’t. Never go to your super secret spy job after class.

A quick bow here. Check. Offering his seat to senpai Doona. Check. Small talk?

“It’s nice to see you today, miss.”

Winter Blues | Solo

Between the weird mix of rain and snow Seoul had been getting for the last few days Jaebum would do anything for a nice and cozy indoor mission. To his luck he wouldn’t have to wait too long for that.

“So… I should invest in a mask is what you’re saying?” Jaebum skimmed through the file. He was interested in the case, honestly. But the weather had him down in the dumps.  He’d more than likely be stuck alone in a ball room full of boring peo--

Bzzt! Bzzt!

He couldn’t help but furrow his brows as his phone vibrated. Against his better judgement Jaebum pulled his phone out to read whatever message he had recieved. Maybe it was important.

Had she been briefed for the same mission? Maybe lady luck would go his way and they’d end up being partners. He gave a second look to the papers before humming to himself. Another few boring minutes of how it was absolutely important he was careful followed by a slight bow and he was out.

Okay maybe he had gotten a bit too excited about it. No harm done. He’d have to re-read the file later however. Maybe once he was warm and cozy in bed with Nora would his brain defrost enough to actually understand what he was reading.

Usual Arguments [ + Daehyun ]

blame, in most cases, was a marbled affair; it twisted and braided, always indefinite and fleeting. even now as jaebum neared, even now as daehyun nodded and agreed, started the neat and paced path towards the exits, he couldn’t pinpoint responsibility. it was too flimsy, broken too quickly; instead he crafted his own with languid thoughts, with silence draped over him.

“well that sucked.” he told jaebum as they fled the crowd and found some privacy; the air, in response, seemed to thin, felt easier to breathe, to think clearly. after all, this left less people to blame; the more he distanced himself from the scene, the more precise it became.

so he walked, paused, stilled his steps slowly when he caught sight of the moon.

the mission had, admittedly, not been their best; of course it wasn’t entirely terrible, but for a perfectionist like daehyun, it meant a total and complete loss, made him feel less than he claimed to be.

and that, the plummet from an elevated ego to a common mistake, forced him to create a defense; he thought to deflect, to shove his responsibility towards jaebum. he thought to separate himself from mistakes so he could continue undisturbed, unbothered by the events.

with ease, he turned, spoke casually, finished with a shrug. “next time, i need you to step it up. i don’t like having failures on my record.”

Was he pleased with the way their mission had gone down? No.

Truth be told it had sucked. As much as he wanted to blame it all on the equipment and on the tech he knew things like this happened (sadly) more often than they would want.

He wouldn’t and more importantly couldn’t blame himself or Daehyun for that matter. That is, until the other spoke for a second time. As soon as he told him he had to ‘step it up’ Jaebum could feel his blood boiling. It was not the time or the place to explode. “Excuse me?” He looked at the other man with a raised brow. Disbelief written all over his face.

Deep breaths Jaebum. Don’t lose your temper yet. It was faulty tech. And nothing more, right--?

Then again what if the other knew and carried on with the mission anyway? At this thought the young man’s face flushed angrily but waited until they were at their checkpoint before shouting whispering angrily in Daehyun’s general direction, “What the hell am I supposed to do with a broken ear piece? Use my magical telekinesis powers to communicate with out handler?”

Deep breaths Jaebum, don’t punch your partner in the jaw.
