It feels like a relevant time to remind people that if you want to prevent abuse in fandom, calling people abusers because you don’t like their ships doesn’t help. You can’t diagnose someone just from what kind of media they consume.

And above and beyond that? Worrying about what someone ships distracts us from how they treat other people, which is the really important part if you want to spot and prevent potential abuse

Here are some things that do work that you (yes, you!) can do to make fandom safer today

Suggest your local groupchat or fandom hangout create Community Guidelines that clearly outline what abuse and harassment are, that they’re not allowed, and what will happen when people engage in them. Make sure these rules work no matter who breaks them, even if that person is in charge!
