just watched a star trek episode about a planet that relied so heavily on it's computer system that they all forgot the basics of their own knowledge. and that allowed them to miss the fact that they were being posioned with radiation and nearly ending their civilization. because they couldn't use their own knowledge to figure things out. i bring this up for no reason in particular

i think one of my favorite moments in all of tos is when they arrive on the Gangster Planet where gansters rule the whole world and one of the first things they see on the street is some random women complaining to the local boss about poorly maintained municipal infrastructure. that is the most star trek thing that could have happened.

i don't ever remember anyone getting upset because i could already read when i started school (i started reading when i was 3 and was on chapter books by 5) but in 5th or 6th grade, we were reading Bridge to Terabithia a bit at a time. i read ahead and one day my teacher overheard me discussing the parts of the book we weren't up to yet with another student who was also reading ahead and punished the whole class by cancelling the plan to watch the 1985 PBS movie version in class. publicly shamed me and turned the whole class on me because i was quietly talking about it with someone else for whom it would not be a spoiler
