Dana watched the scene for a moment before she decided to follow her mother example. She stepped foward and pressed a kiss on her father’s forehead. Then she carefully placed Her head beside his on the pillow. "Wake up daddy. It’s time to go home now."
The next few hours were spent getting Steve home, up the stairs, and comfortable. Once he was set up in bed an Claudia was sat next to him, they called Dana back him. They explained the whole situation to her, piece by piece. They told her that he was shot in the leg, and to be careful around him for a while. They told her that it was an accident, that no one had intended to hurt Steve. And they let her ask any questions she had.
The first question that came to the young girl’s mind was ‘how can you unintentionally shoot someone?’, But then she remembered her own ‘special gift’ and decided to keep that one back. She took a moment to think of a question. She didn’t want to sound dumb or weak. "Do… do you already know how long you’ll be… hurt?"
"Not long, honey. It wasn’t a major wound." Claudia jumped straight into answering, not leaving Steve a second to think about it. Realizing her mistake, she sat back and looked to him to answer questions for Dana.
The child’s blue eyes wandered from her mother to her father, sending him a questioning glance. Of course she knew that Claudia had technically told her the truth. But she wanted to hear it from the injured man himself. He gave her a reassuring smile. “I’ll be fine.”
Claudia watched as Steve smiled at his daughter warmly. Claudia knew Steve was not one to sugarcoat things, especially not with the child that shared his gift. On that same note, they shouldn't scare her. Ever since she came along the two of them had been more on edge about the danger they put themselves in with their job. There had to be a good mix, but this situation had shaken things up so that the mix was rather hard to find.
