Silly human Spamtenna idea I had…
The whole time I made this I was giggling going DOES HE KNOW!?
I have so many thoughts about human Spamtenna dude so many.
So this comic came about from the idea I’ve seen floating around of human Tenna being like a Jim Henson sort of figure, which I think is cute for him and works for the inevitable whammy that is this comic for human Spamton (hereby called Spencer). I love the idea of his character for the show just being the puppet Spamton we all know and there’s something deeply, cosmically wrong about it to Spencer. Something he can’t quite put his finger on, but something that strikes him with deathly fear the moment he sees it.
In this comic, he sees himself in the puppet the moment he lays his eyes upon it, even if it is a very cartoony caricature of him, he can tell it’s him. Furthermore, he sees the controlling aspects of the puppet back upon himself, like seeing it going limp as Tenna moves it toward the very coffin-like case it came in—if that’s him, he can’t let it get sent away. Those are all the reasons he flips on his initial refusal—he can’t stomach the idea of someone else controlling what is supposed to be him.
And the cruelly ironic part about being too disturbed to touch it and use it like a hand puppet is he’s the one that affixes his own strings to this puppet body—strings that will come to haunt him and his decaying mind.
I have a fun idea I wanna draw of Spencer on the brink of mental collapse at the hands of his own stress and the human AU version of Friend/the mysterious caller, and as his mental state is worsening, he begins to assign more human traits to the puppet, like it’s really alive, as much as he is. And in the end when he’s the most unstable, he sees it move and speak to him, using the same over the top personality we see in Spamton prime and what he would have acted out in human AU TV Time. In the end, the character completely gets away from him, and he can no longer tell the difference between reality and fiction.
Lastly, as Spencer can’t literally become the puppet like in deltarune, I think the way this happens is a bit more metaphorical. If anyone’s seen Bojack Horseman, there’s a repeating gag throughout the show that the washed up celebrity main character (the titular Bojack Horseman), no matter where he goes, he’s always recognized as “hey, aren’t you the Horse from Horsin’ Around?” This is how human Spamton becomes the puppet.
No matter his achievements in his prime, no matter what movies or commercials he made, no matter every last thing he might have been proud of, he’s only ever remembered as “hey, aren’t you the puppet from TV Time?” His legacy is the exact same puppet that haunted him the moment he saw it, and in the end it subsumed him just as he feared. In the end, he really was a puppet, all the same.
